Hi,

I have heard a couple of 2.8 and 2.9 engines running and they all sound quite tappity to me, mine included. Does the Cologne engine generally have this characteristic or is it a sign of high mileage or other problems? Mine has done 76k.

I have checked the valve clearances which were fine and am considering changing the tappits and push rods.

I was wondering if anyone has any opinions or experience of this.

Cheers

Yes, especially in an S with minimal sound-deadening.

Yes !

I do my tappets evrys 12000 miles and they are quiet for about a 1000 before they are back again.

I've got 85000 on the clock of mine.

Yup, they all do it. Mine had 38K miles when I got it and still had the noise.

Cheers,

Same here, rattly as buggery after a few days after adjusting the clearances. My car has done 84K miles. The garage said it was pretty quiet for a ford 2.9.

My S3c is very tappity on startup and then quietens down after a couple of minutes. I put it down to the oil leaking out of the hydraulic tappits as the engines done 87K miles.

S3c (probably S4c) unlike the other S's have hydraulic tappits although they still have the adjusting nuts in the rocker box. I found this out when I tried (and failed) to adjust them.

My S2 has just been serviced (tappits adjusted), so it is currently quieter than usual. It usually lasts a few days before the full rattle returns. It has done this for the last 10 years!

I havn't driven my S3 due to it being striped down to a bare shell ready for a nut and bolt rebuild. Its my first TVR so i read all the posts here every day and must say that i have learnt a lot from you all.
With regard to engine noise on a 2.9 lump, has anyone tried SLICK 50 ?
I had a 325 BMW witch was as noisy as hell but after treating with SLICK 50 it sounded a lot better and fuel economy was greatly improved.
Any comments ?
Regards

Dean

Thanks for all your replies and I'm glad to hear this noise is normal for these engines. Don't think I'll bother with replacing the tappets and push rods now.

Interesting about the Slick 50. Is there any downside to using this other than the additional cost?

Thanks agin..
