No Red Battery Light
Discussion
as the title says I've no red battery warning light on the dash when the ignition is turned on.
just changed the belt this evening (threw the old one off a few weeks ago)....
There appears to be a loose cable round the back of the alternator, but it does not seem to reach to anything.
Any pics of the rear of a Pre Cat Alternator (I believe these to be slightly diff to the 500's) so I can check all wiring is correct an present....

Are you getting a charge on the voltmeter when the engine is running ?
yep getting charge whilst running.....Edited by AntonyJ on Monday 21st April 21:26
cheers for pic.... will have look tomorrow night... where I thought the loose cable went is not connected on yours either.

Prob, bulb/led blown then - there is a resistor in parallel so that this doesn't prevent excitement of the alt.
I'll get a spare one them to day as well......anyone know the bulb size pre-cat griff red battery light ?????
I must try and get my bible back

is the cable to the right of the exposed spade terminal connectiom near the top of the alternator not connected (ie loose and just tucked up tight)...... if so I'm all ok at the alternatoror....
got led out of dash, is the similar to the door led RS 210 973 but as follows 8mm fixing red colour 12v ac/dc Rs 212-351 ......or is it smaller (don't have door locked led to compare)

Mr Spend....I took the led out last night (Led fixed into retaining plastic case with spade conntection terminal attached)....... and ordered a similar looking one ac/dc 12V.
However in boredom last night I took the LED/casing apart and found one of the LED prongs shortened and a small brown thingy soldiered on (the resistor I assume)....
Does this mean I have to make the part up and somehow reinstall it in the plastic case with connector on the end (does not look as simple as just pushing it back in)?
or
can i buy them ready made like this, if so from where ?
or
or will a standard led with case attached suffice ?
The world is your oyster....
If you blow a led/bulb and the resistor is missing your alt will not start to charge. - so not only is the warning failed but the alt is effectively disabled. The parallel resistor is a must IMHO.
Plenty of options for how you do it, spades / solder / direct to Led legs / modular...

ok i think i've got it....
the brown thing being the resistor IS required to allow the alternator to charge..
rather then mucking about trying to find the right resistor, i'll use the old one as it appeared to be working as the amp meter was working with the revs prior to led removal....
then a mater of cobling to gether inline so how, never done soldering so that looks like the route to go (a new toy to play with)

Nearly...the brown thing being the resistor IS required to allow the alternator to charge..
in the case of the bulb/led failing.... (provides an alternate path - TVR fault tolerance if you like
)So to summarise...
I can replace the led unit without the brown thingy (resisistor),BUT I run the risk of if the led bulb blows/goes tits up I loose all charging capabilities all for the failure of a bulb and come to a stop.
If I install the brown thingy, and the led bulb fails, the resistor does something and charging carries on with me non the wiser, until I realise I have no warning light when I turn the ignition on next time.
Based on that.... I concur with you that it is a very sensible to resinstall the resistor.....
To be honest I would never have thought twice about it unless I had not pulled the LED plastic housing apart, and just thaught the resistor you refered to initially was somewhere else in the wiring....... I wonder how many people have changed the bulb as an off the shelf unit without realising its modified
I would never have dreamt changing a light bulb would be so complicated

You got it.... Much better to separate the 2 bits IMHO for the reasons / ease in the future.
The ign light circuit performs 2 functions, to excite the field coils & show the alt is charging, the first one many people forget (but it is the big distinction between dyno & alt ((magnets vs field coils)). The other important feature of course is that the ign light glows if you cast the fan belt - which also droves the water pump
Its quite a significant function for a tiddly bit of electrickery

..... well I't does not appear to be the led bulb.... fitted three new ones last night.... and none of them work.
time for a professional i think.
Well I told you where to go for help time for a professional i think.

unfortunatly car is not moving ..... got a mobile chappy coming round on Wednesday.

you've polished all the paint off it....... no wonder the car has taken so long
