03 Auto Audi A6 - 'accelerating' when you brake

Its not possessed !
Audi 03 Tdi 1.9 Auto with CVT box if that matters.
But sometimes when you brake the engine revs increase to say 2000rpm which means you obviously have to jam the brakes on pretty hard to stop the car.
No fault codes have been recorded and its very intermittant.
Ideas please.
I was wondering if its an overactive idle speed control or sticking TPS or something.
