4200 or Gransport???
Discussion
Hi, I am sure that this question has been asked before many times but I would like to ask you people in the know which car is the better car to buy, I am genuinely looking at a 35k gransport with about 20k miles on with a fresh service, but hving been bitten before on a ropey older 3200 GT I am reluctant to take the step if its going to be a financial pit. If the car is three years old what should have been carried out on the car and what is due for renewal, i.e. do I need to budget for a bit of jiggery pokery under the bonnet, running gear etc?? your help is most apreciated, thanks.
p.s. how long will I have to wait until an 8C is affordable? forever I know!

GS is widely considered to be better built than the 3200 and 4200's, but its still a Maserati...so budget for bills.
Having done a fair bit of reading on this very subject )lots on here, do a search and also pop over to maseratiforum.co.uk.), I think a 2005 GS would be the way to go.
Out of interest, which car are you looking at, the Black one at Graypaul? If so, its been for sale a while so bargain hard.

Thanks for your comments chaps , to be honest if I could get a 3200 for good money that had been cared for and book stamped I would probably go for that because the shape didnt change much but the boomerang lights were lovely. However I am thinking the more you spend on the car up front the better you get! The GS for me is the pinacle of how good that shape could look and would be the choice for me purely on looks alone, having said that I know nothing about the up keep of these cars apart from a service will cost 1k and a clutch three times that. So you realy have to think hard about your heart ruling your head here!!! thanks again for your comments.
I was looking at a silver car on the car spy, it looks realy nice but doesnt talk about the history, I will give him a call. Still doing a bit of ground work.
p.s. one other thing, I assume that if I bought a 4200 or a 3200 the GS wheels would fit any maser?????

Jimmy, do you have a link to the silver one? I've seen the blue ones that must be due a birthday but not the silver one at £35k...sounds interesting....
As for the boomerang lights, what a poor poor decision....thank you USA
Not telling! As for the boomerang lights, what a poor poor decision....thank you USA

( no offence )from the ad it looks pretty mint and the car has "Just been reduced" and am hoping it will sit for a while longer with the new gt being launched and the economy slowing it may drop again and that will convince me to cancel the gtr (nissan are P*ssing me off) and get me an italian.Ok after writing that i have decided to fess up, its on PH classifieds. Hopefully you are only curious and not wanting one.

IIRC I think they will but because of the lower profile tyres (standard tyres are 18's vs 19's on GS) there is the element of having it lowered/GS Suspension otherwise it will look like an off roader! jimmyb said:

I am looking, only half-heartedly at the moment as I need to get out of my current car.
In terms of the silver one, I misread and thought it was for sale at Lovett's. I thought you'd found a stash I wasnt aware of!
The ad that says "just reduced" - I'm assuming that the eBay one? If thats the case, "just" means weeks ago....so you might get your reduction. For info, this car wouldn't interest me.Good luck with the search

Just wanted to say I changed the standard wheels on my 4200 for the GS 19' wheels - fit perfectly, and look great...
Good luck with the hunt...

thanks for the link chaps to the other maserati forum it has frightened me to a degree especially the long long .........long list of items to look out for when buying a maser! its quite a task looking for a car, finding a car, looking after the car, surely there is some time for enjoying the car hidden in all this!!!
Hi,
I think when buying a Maser, you have to tread reasonably carefully but not overtly. Make sure it's been fully serviced and stamped by the FM dealer etc.
From my personal experience, I went for a GS it has been a fantastic car. I can not complain. Yes, all new cars have small niggles but they all get ironed out in the first 6 months by the 1st owener. 2nd owners are the lucky ones! I bought my GS in 2005 brand new and appart from a clutch being replaced under warranty @ 19,000 miles, I have not had any problems.
If you look after it, it looks like new. Specifications can also vary. I paid about £9K in options to spec the car to my taste so the initial in-price of a new GS could have been anywhere between £66K and £80K if you went mad!.
There are a few colour combinations. I went for Black with the Anthracite/Gun Metal Wheels, Red Calipers and Black Grids but I think it also looks good in Silver. A careful note on the wheels. Because they are flush to the tyre, they kerb easily. No lip on them like on a 911. But at £50 per wheel to refurb, they look like new. A small price to pay.
Overall, would I do it again? Yes I would. What is a shame for me is that my Modus Operandi to work has changed over the past year meaning that I did 24K miles in the first 2 years and 1K miles in the past 12 months. With a young family and needing the family car at weekends, I hardly use the Maser, so am putting it up for sale as it shames me that it just does not get used.
It is a fantastic daily driver and if you learn how to change gear properly, you will not waste the clutch. When I had the clutch changed under warranty @ 19K miles, they found the clutch was only 22% worn at 19K miles. So whenever you hear the horror stories about a new clutch every 7K miles, it is just not true and if you remember it is a manual without a clutch pedal, you'll be OK. The dealer thought that I would have got about 45K miles at least on the original clutch if it did not need replacing for another issue.
Happy to answer any other questions.

I know what you mean about feeling guilty, but its a large investment and testing a few is the only way you will get it right.WBmaserati said:

Wesley,Thanks, I'm really pleased with how different the car looks with the GS wheels... I was fortunate to get them from a FML 'parts' supplier who was breaking up a 'written off' GS (the wheels and tyres were in perfect condition, and I needed 4 new tyres which would have cost £225 a corner anyway), instead, I bought the wheels, and paid around £1250 plus VAT for all 4...
Yes, its my every day driver... very reliable, have done more than 30K miles since getting the car (on same clutch by the way) although intend to have that replaced soon... rear tyres last me around 10,000 miles, front tyres 20,000 miles... I buy a warranty each year (for peace of mind) - these vary depending on level of cover you get - typically £500 - £1,500 per year... servicing, depends on the service, mine have ranged from £800-£1,500, I get around 17-18 MPG... Insurance, mine is under £800 per annum....
Lovely car...
Cheers,
John
I just bought a GS. Had a 996 previously.
Can concour on the alloys - I kerbed the back massively within one hour of owning - doh! Wheel positioning rather different than the porker...
So far I think it rocks - the interior is awesome, it sounds amazing and looks fantastic! Also the CC box is actually pretty easy and smooth once you get used to it (unless you give it the full beans in which case its pretty brutal)!
no comment on the running costs so far - I got about 200miles out of the first tank and that included a fair bit of city trundling...
