Nottingham evening post are currently running a big feature today and tommorow regarding the success of the cameras here.

Below is a snippet from the net
www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=66056&command=displayContent&sourceNode=65583&contentPK=6699532

They again mention the fact that the Nottingham SPECs cameras are dedicated to the tragic death of a young lad. The car that killed him was doing 41 in a 30 but also over the drink drive limit which is not mentioned in the article.

The way they are talking Nottingham will be a grid of SPECs in a few years.

Quite rightly so, after all its speed that kills.

There's a poll on that site.

"Do you want more cameras?"

I feel we should make our voices heard.

Slightly off-topic but are there any notorious spots I should look out for in Nottingham? I'm up there this friday coming up the M1 to somewhere near the Uni campus.

So the driver was over the drink limit at the time but this wasn't mentioned.

I guess they'll clutch at any straw that "reinforces" their simplistic "speed kills" mentality. Mentioning the drink-drive bit would cloud their issue.

Strangely there've been many times that I've gone through cameras in Nottingham (where I live) and recieved no tickets. Yet I journey out to Long Eaton and get one there!

IIRC the SPECs are on the ring road but there are a couple of GATSO's on University Boulevard

Not only are there many fixed cameras in the city, but the Scamera Vans are also out in force. I got done 4 weeks ago by one and my girlfriend one week ago.

The vans are not very noticeable from behind. They normaly leave the back doors open so there are no markings and the vans have orange lights.

Most (if not all) main roads into Nottingham have cameras so be careful

My advice would be to not speed anywhere in Nottingham as there is a good chance of getting caught (sorry - I meant because it was dangerous )

The Notts Evening Post obviously got fed up of the way the vote was going - they look to have pulled it!

The A453 from jc24 in to West Bridgford (south of Nottingham) is a nice straight road with sweeping bends and long straights.

AFAIK there are no cameras on the NSL part (there are once you get in to built up area!).

It's often VERY busy, but if you can get on there late at night, it's a fun drive with plenty of overtaking - people seem to think 40 is reasonable on there in the NSL

A similar article on the 'success' of these cameras was published in the Daily Telegraph today - sent the following letter in response:

Nottingham Speed Cameras Really a Success?

Dear Sir,

Whilst the introduction of Speed Cameras on Nottingham's ring road has certainly been a spectacular success in terms of raising revenue (Page 3 article, 14th August), the Nottinghamshire Road Casualty Reduction Partnership has failed adequately to explain how the cameras have actually improved safety on this road.

As evidenced by your report, since their introduction the cameras have demonstrably failed to prevent at least 98,000 motorists exceeding the designated speed limit. And yet, despite all these drivers continuing to speed, there have been no fatalities.

Any reasonable interpretation of the facts would therefore suggest that speeding, per se, is not the real safety problem here. Indeed, the NRCRP notably fail to mention that at least one of the fatal accidents cited as a justification for the cameras' introduction was alcohol, rather than speed, related - something that, unlike proper traffic policing, 'safety' cameras will never be able to detect.

Nonetheless, and in spite of the proven inability of their existing cameras to curb 'speeding', the NRCRP is committing the money raised from fines to "buying more cameras". The assertion by spokeswoman Angela Daykin that "The speed cameras aren't there to raise money..." should thus be treated somewhat sceptically, don't you think?

Yours sincerely,

SuperSteve

Be interested to see if they publish it...
