wouldnt start !

I had a problem during Sundays 300 mile thrash over the border. I stopped for a cuppa in Moffat and when I tried to restart, Click (like a big relay ??)....... nothing ! ignition off and back on again, nothing... not a volt. no instruments, lights , anything.
Up went the bonnet - nothing amiss there, battery and connections looked OK, but I decided to remove the Battery Isolator connection anyway, re-connected the lead and I had lights etc again...
turned ignition and same happened again...
now I know I have had a problem with a sticking starter motor before and it seemed to be a likely culprit, so with reverse engaged, I rocked the car and was alarmed to hear a loud "Click" from the starter motor area - as if a cog was jumping !!! anyway, back into neutral, disconnect the battery terminal, reconnect and this time Vroom...
what I cant understand is why I should have to disconnect and reconnect the battery to restore the power... theres no alarm fitted at the minute, and no immobiliser fitted - as far as I know anyway given that I had to remove two alarm circuits during the 2007 refurb... No fuses were blown
anyone any idea ?
edited to say it has been fine since with no repeat of the problem.

My first thought was the ignition switch connector - but that only affects ignition-controlled circuits so if you say you had no lights either then I think that rules that out.
Then I though that maybe the starter motor or solenoid was sticking, but again, that wouldn't leave you with no lights...
It does sound more like an immobiliser-type issue, resetting after you reconnect the battery. I think I would look to the wiring when you took the alarm out...

Thanks, you are reinforcing my suspicions. The starter motor will be replaced as it has stuck before - but not for some time... I will go hunting for an immobiliser but theres not much room under the dash for my hands and head... You dont still have that Trained Hamster do you ?
The steering column cowl was removed at the time as I suspected a connection at first, I dont have the big yellow troublesome one...
