Links / New windows / different browsers
Discussion
I noticed once or twice recently that clicking links opened the link in the current window, replacing PH rather than in a new window like wot it was before. Example is the link at the top here -

Firefox on linux, opera on linux, ie6 on w2k all reuse the same window.
opera on w2k and ie7 on 2k3 both open in new windows.
If possible, it would be better if all browsers opened links in a new window.
Many thanks!

Opera on Linux opens that in a new tab here.Firefox on linux, opera on linux, ie6 on w2k all reuse the same window.
However if you look at the page source it doesn't have target=_blank, it has Target=""

That is one of the most annoying features of so many websites - I go to open a link and it opens a new tab to display it. I want the links to open in the same window so I can use the back button when I've finished reading them. If I want a new tab I'll
well right-click and open in new tab. Having new tabs thrust upon me is really annoying. (Rantlet not directed at PH but at target=_blank in general.)So...
If possible, it would be better if there was an option in your profile to turn "target=_blank" on or off.
How bizzare - just trying opera on vista at home and ie7 on vista and both of them open in new windows. And I just VNC'd into the same machine I tried IE6/w2k on earlier and now that's opening the same link I tried ealier in new windows! Am I going insane in the membrane?? Perhaps I should just pretend this was all a dream.
eta, I see your point but I find that if I open links in the same tab I'm forever forgetting and just closing that tab rather than remembering to hit 'back', also quite often I want to spawn a new tab with the link on it but just leave it there to read later. Horses for courses I guess!

One would hope that sooner or later browsers will start offering an override for target=_blank in line with the accessibility compliance guidelines that say that until browsers offer users the choice, target=_blank should not be used at all. Which is quite annoying because personally I prefer external site links to open in a new tab.
Just got another one,

Yeah 99% of the time thats how it works here too, its just every now and then it doesnt! I´ve seen it on a few different machines & browsers now, and even seen it where I´ve tried the same link on the same machine a few hours later and its behaved differently. Most odd. Thanks for the tips though.
