V8 life expectancy

My first Griff 4.0 had 75k without a spanner on it when I sold it and my current Griff 500 is up to 65k and just made 303bhp on a rolling road test. No engine work done on either of them but both were very regularly used, treated gently but driven hard when warmed up.
For the performance available my experience is of pretty astounding reliability.

You see Range Rovers with basicaly the same engine with huge milages on them. They may not be driven as "hard", but a range rover must be double the weight of a Griff, so most of the time the engine is working hard even if it is not being taken to high revs.
Frequent oil changes is the key, with good quality oil. And expect to have to do a cam approx every 60k
My 350i had nearly 120k on when I sold it. It had spent a fair bit of time doing track days and sprints, but the engine was in good health. Only major work that I know off ( and I had it for 9 years ) was a cam at 70k
edited for gelling and srammer..

Bought 4.3 Chim w/106K and no evidence of engine work, didn't check cooling system before going on a leisurely (and slightly illegal as still on UK plates) drive - result: headgaskets went. Time for a rebuild as oil pressure was lowish, too. Engine builder took it apart and found that apart from the cam (2 lobes more or less round) and the bearings nothing much had worn on the engine.
Wouldn't mention the RV8 in the same breath as for instance the old Saab 2 litre four bangers - those were just about broken in at 100,000 miles...

personally start saving now. Cam will be first to go, then a piston or three will expload and kill the engine. Happened to me a year ago. The rest is a long story. However 11 k later i still hav`nt got it back.
Got to be a tasty engine for 11K?120k and counting, 1/2liter of oil every 1k and nil issues in 10k of my ownership, oil pressure hot 22psi idle 45/50psi(garage test gauge)fast idle, and no evidence of motor being pulled down(and i would know)
and if the cam & lifters have been done i have no invoice for proof of this HC cammed(if ever)look after this engine and it will run for alot longer, its not a stressed unit and if an owner is honest seldom driven flat out for long periods if any,i certainly have every confidence in my motor, its history not mileage that kills a motor, some TVR owners are like some Superbike owners obsessed with low mileage
few know the secret, all IMHO of course.
