Unfathomably Slow

Site performance was appalling for about 18 months, and we either persevered or gave up, then for the last couple of months, it's been better, but for the last couple of weeks, it's been like the bad old days again, appalling. I've given up and abandoned the site no end of times in the last week or two, it's next to useless.

The recent improvements were down to the increased hardware (albeit too long in the pipeline). We're now hot on the case of some parts of the site which need optimising or rethinking. We identified and fixed two major items today which have had a beneficial effect and we'll be back on the case in the morning to continue that work.
The bottom line is that PH is a bespoke system. It wouldn't have succeeded had it not been, but that can present real challenges when it's growing apace. The classifieds system for example has grown five fold in 18 months and whilst the basic architecture I designed is scalable, we have identified some features which although used infrequently can pull its pants down when they are.
Yes, in an ideal world the whole system would be designed by blokes in white coats, benchmarked, have a team of ten crack coders on it late into every night and be tested by a team of professors on speed. That's not the way PH evolved, and whilst it may be in corporate hands now, we are still on a journey to that goal.
I appreciate it can be crap and it probably looks like nothing's changing from a user's perspective. However, behind the scenes we have made great strides forwards and PH is in a much better place than it was a few months back (honestly!). We've got more work to do to nail this week's challenges, but I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.
We'll be back on it tomorrow morning.

im showing no new posts for the last 20 minutes, when i click on a post, i get nothing to be seen here, and time after time getting bored waiting for pages to load.
We had some problems with one of our database servers which have now been rectified.Normal service should now have resumed!

That's nothing, I'm regularly on here into the small hours! 
It seems from Ted's post that PH is a bespoke system under constant development to meet it's needs.
I used to frequent another bespoke-written forum (BlatChat for the Se7eners), and like PH it was free from clutter, simple to read and relied more on content than style.
Given what Ted has indicated, PH is now even better in my mind than I already thought it was. The problems are irksome but nothing more.
