I would imagine the severe cost of doing it would outweigh the financial benefits of doing so.
Buy a 3.0i z3 if you want performance. or a 320d if you want economy. In fact you could buy both for the cost of buying a z3 then fitting a 535d engine.

I've seen '35d engines for £1750 on Ebay.
And?i challenge you to buy engine, box, ecu, wiring loom, integrate that into the z3, upgrade the suspension, custom radiator, steering rack problems, custom exhaust, custom electricals, upgrade the brakes, and have change out out £10,000.
Calm down boys, it was only a question.
I have currently got a TVR S with a Cosworth V6, which goes like the clappers, and if driven sensibly does up to 30mpg on a run. I also have a Golf GT 140 Tdi for daily mileage, oh and a Fazer FZS1000 for when I really want to scare myself! I dream of the day I can buy a car, which is both fast and frugal. I do not like big cars, but love sports cars. We have no kids to have to drag into this depressing world.
The other day I read an article in practical performance car about someone who had put a 2.5lt BMW turbo diesel into a Scimitar, and I thought what a good idea. Only trouble is Reliant Scimitars do not do it for me, but Z3`s nearly do. It all started off with the thought of putting said diesel into a Tuscan, but that really was going to cost the earth, but I thought beautiul car, designed for a straight six, with an crappy engine that you could sell for a few thousand, and I would keep it for the long term with a BMW diesel. The only downside being obviously the cost, and the TVR build quality long term....whence Z3.
I was just interested if anyone had already done it, or something similar?
