There's something not quite right with my steering and I've got a feeling it's the rack. What are the symptoms of a failure with a PAS rack?

I've checked the fluid levels (it was fractionally but not significantly low) and done a full check of all the suspension bolts but it still feels vague around the centre point. It's as if the input I give the steering wheel doesn't translate directly to the wheels. It's very hard to describe but if you've ever ridden a bike with the castor level set too steep that's kinda how it feels.

Heelp!!!!

I'd look for wear in the UJs before I blame the rack - they're cheaper wink

Sadly I don't think it's them. Although it does have a feeling of play about centre, the movement seems to be from the top of the rack where the column enters. Is it sealed or is there any scope for removing the backlash without a total stripdown?

When were your balljoints and track rod ends last replaced?
Still cheaper than a rack.

Speaking of power steering, are the metal pipes that connect to the rack TVR specials, or off something else?

Do I need to get one made up, or do any of the TVR specialists keep them? I tried a couple without success.

The union on one pipe is iffy and weeps slightly. V8D tried tightening it, but suggested getting it replaced. The pipe needed comes out the rack on the forward edge at a 45 angle heading up.

Sod it, the rack is almost out now. I'll have it refurbed and replace the knuckle joints while I'm at it. Don't think there'll be an untouched part on the whole front end then biggrin

Update, there was a loose piston in the rack... That'll account for the 130MPH death wobble then biggrin
