I have a problem with my 97 400 Chim. When the tank is just below 1/2 full the car starts to smell of fuel, As it starts to drop it gets to the point where its almost unsafe to drive from the fumes... Any ideas???

No - I'm serious..

This is not a mullet attack question.

People have had this issue before - worth doing a search..

If its burnt fuel smell then it is more than likely there is a gap in the boot seal. The air from the exhaust gets sucked into the boot and then through the rear vents behind the seats.

Worth checking.

The 1/2 tank bit dosen't make sense unless the tank is being presureised when you get the smell try releasing the filler cap and see if you get a good hiss and listen for a metalic noise from the tank springing back to shape. This would indicate a block purge/vent.

Failing that just remove the panel above the tank quicj and easy and get the pipes a check and have a smell for fuel.
