Door gas ram end broke !!!

Well that about sums it up just gone to open drivers door ansd the end of the gas ram broke off !!! looks like it will have to be a new hinge as its pressed on ,anyone had same problems ?? would be better if i could just change the gas ram but i,m not sure that is possible !!

Been there. In my case it was the black plastic piece the broke. Had to get new ones from the factory. They are really proud of these little replacement parts and charge a fortune for them.

great why am i not supprised !!! did you have to replace the whole gas strutt ?? and how did you seperate it from the hinge ??

right yep its just the little ball joint end thats bust ,any guesses how much they are ???

Don't know how much the factory charge but looked at struts for another project and found all things gas strut related to be very costly.

You can however get the same end fittings in metal which would probably be even more expensive but with the potential of only doing it once.

Replaced mine with a spare that Graham had on his hinge... very easy to break, but very easy to replace as well.

Check your hinge does not have a spare one on the other side of it as Grahams one does... if it does your sorted... if it doesn't strip grahams at stoneliegh and take the spare on from the other side lol.

I stripped mine by knocking the door backwards, I can be clumsy sometimes. Anyway anyone loked at replacing just the end with a new metal piece? Lee

i will send you some no problem ,the eyes on your link have 8mm dia holes !!the ones on the can-am are only 6mm !! are you sure they are right ??? have found a supplier of the 6mm units but only in plastic . let me know which is right . Simon

Next day delivery and very helpful... You just need to measure the old struts up for the correct size. I bought adjustable ones, so you can set the opening forces by releasing some of the pressurised nitrogen from the strut... Very useful!

You are correct - the facory hinge side is indeed 6mm in diameter. I really appreciate your offer to send me acouple of the ends, let me know how much to Paypal you and where by email. I am not in a rush so take your time.

metal ones sound like a very worthwhile upgrade as the plastic ones will definatelly end up failing as the ones on my canam did over time, they are just so weak.... recon its only an issue on canams due to the deflection of the doors.

Got it sorted today ,could not find any metal ends that fitted but spoke to Lawrence at www.specialty-fasteners.co.uk ,he was very helpfull, they supply the struts to ultima and he showed some concern that there is enough stress to brake the joint !!!He is going to look into making metal ends but would advise that the plastic ends are changed every now and then to avoid any issues .

Ikom he is sending me 4 ends F.O.C. which i thought was great service !!! pm your details andd i will post them too you . Simon

I broke the end of my driver's side door gas strut too. It happened during the build. It broke on the plastic part. I just used super-glue and glued it back together. so far so good.
