Citoen AX GT ignition Amplifier
Discussion
So....just bought an amazingly conditioned 20 year old, 42,000 miler. It's been sitting on a drive for over a year & cosmetically I've got it looking mint. However, it cuts out when the engine gets warm. I'm pretty sure it's the ignition amplifier, I've taken it off and removed alot of 'limescale' type substance from the side of the dizzy but after sarting it from cold in 5 minutes it just cuts out!
Firstly, is it the ignition amplifier, why is it cutting out?
Secondly, do I need to get a new one (£60+) or do I just need to get some of the special grease that apparently comes with a new one that stops it cutting out?

Er, that limescale stuff might have been mating compound (unless I have misunderstood your post). It improves heat transfer from the ignition module to the distributor housing. It starts off slippery and white, and ends up gummy and grey.
Yes it's a bit of a pain spending 60quid on a new module, but it is more often than not the part at fault. My 106 and father's 405 both needed new ones. I thought it had gone on brother's 205, but a snapped cambelt turned out to be the reason we had no sparks - doh! Similar symptoms. No sparks and everything else working as it should. Just forgot to check the distributor was actually going round.
Anyway, back on topic... my 106 used to cut out at random intervals. Could go for days, or cut out twice in 5 mins. Changed the ignition module for one from a scrappy 205. Not missed a beat since.
The modules are fairly common across most PSA engines. Just watch out if you change the whole distributor. The relationship between input and output isn't always the same. 106 fired 90deg out with the 205 dizzy on.
By the way, this whole post is assuming Peugeot/Citroen commonality. I have been talking about TU and XY engines.
Hope it helps

Tried the old amplifier but now with the special grease, fired up straight away, but.....as soon as it got up to temperature & the fan was about to cut in.....it died
Maybe the amp from the scrappy was duff too?
Is there a cut out when the engine gets too hot?....I doubt it. Anyway the temp gauge wasnt even half way up.

Was it exactly the same amp, i.e. the number on top is the same? If so then it sounds like you got a duff one.Maybe the amp from the scrappy was duff too?
GSF are showing the module at £35.20+vat at the moment for a brand new guaranteed one...
