Can someone scan pages 44 & 45? I've had a pic published (fire spinning) and I need to figure out the context before writing to the mag to organise payment.

Not going to be able to get the current copy out here for some time.

Cheers smile

Graham,

The context is an article related to "Best of British", and is all about "Traditional" (read "a bit strange&quotwink events. Others include Cheese Rolling, Bog Snorkling and the World Gurning Championship.

Your image is credited to both you and the Beltane Fire Society.

If you want to send me your email address, I'll scan the pages for you.

Marvellous, PM on its way. Sounds like something that requires payment. I can't remember the details of the conversation I had with the Fire Soc folks.

Do the photography monthlies pay for submitted pictures that are printed? I've always thought the mere glory of having one's photo printed was enough for most?

So should Digital Camera magazine pay me for images I've submitted as a reader which they have published?

I did rather think that if any money was going to be involved, it would have been agreed before publication!

the photo's actually ended up in a gallery section of the mag. think i ended up gettting some free memory cards and a flashy card reader. whacked them on ebay and made about £150 (3/4 years ago..prob woth £1.50 now....posted)

point is, they do accept submissions and pay you IF they use your photo's to illustrate an article.

didn't work for me but then i dont have a lot of 'practicle photography' type photo's.

Went and bought the magazine today - hmm, see what you mean, it's illustrating an editorial article, so I agree, payment should be made.

But where did the magazine source the picture? Was it with a picture library in which case they would have paid for it, or was it sent in as a speculative readers pic that they kept on file....?

I think you should be told!

Got it, thanks Simon.

I knew it was submitted, but our organiser (Photo team for the Beltane Fire Society) submitted several from about 5 of us so I didn't know if it would be used.

Money was certainly mentioned in the email conversation between me and him but I suspect I would have waived at least half, if not all of it, in favour of the society, I just can't remember the details. We all agreed a long time ago to split any profits from prints between 'tog and society so that we could collectively recoup printing and subsidise lens rental in the future, and possibly help fund exhibitions etc. The whole Beltane thing is very much a voluntary situation from everyone involved, not just the photographers.

So while I agree that payment should definitely be made for use of my image, it could have been made to the Society. I'll need to check.

Well well well...

No payment at all.

Time to draft a stern email and go over some heads.

As I mentioned above, I am more than happy for any cash to go to the group or society as a whole, but I really do believe that "being in print" for nothing can only hurt the industry.

Anyone got any form invoices or owt?

I should mention that my hosting has gone tits up, so if anyone's mailed anything to my profile address, consider it lost.

grahambutler@gmail.com is the best bet.

Well, I've sent them an email asking for the address to send an invoice to, so we shall see.

I'll also included a bit of a treatise on why free publication is killing the industry biggrin
