Golf Gti Mk3 '92' Non starter.

Right this one ha s left me feeling ever so gutted.
I recently gave up the lifestyle of buying a car on finance and making payments every month to car that gonna be worth less than the paper the credit agreement is printed on by the end of it all.
so, i sold my mini cooper s and did a bit of shoping around. i found a nice lil golf gti mk3 (1992) had a wee poke around at it, it looked like it needed a lil tlc but all the body work was in great shape as well as the interior. however a few days later the damn thing just wont start.
The tank is full of petrol, the battary has plenty of life, im turning off the imobilisor. sticking the key in the ignition and turning and all im getting is the sound of the car trying to start, however the engine isnt kicking in.
i currently have my friend's dad (who happens to be a mechanic) looking into it for me right now, however he hasnt been able to find the problem.
the only things that where majorly noticable where that while driving the car accelirated fine but while trying to maintain a steady speed it sometimes felt as though it was losing power then gaining it, and that the revs did peak then drop after changing gears.
im not too fussed about having to do work on a car that is quite so old but im finding this one a bit of a head scratcher, any ideas let me know and if you can give me a rough idea on how much it may set me back.

Ok, well changed the fuelpump over and the car was running like a dream, for about a week, then the same problem started up. The fuel pump is working fine as you can hear it kicking in when the key gets turned, and ther is definatly petrol getting to the engine.
I have change the sparkplugs, distributer cap & the rotary arm as tey all looked as if they could do with a clean up. although its still not starting.
I have however noticed that the spark from the distributor is a yellowish colour rather than a nice blue colour, im assuming this is a problem with the coil.
If anyone can confirm this then it would be a great help.
