Do I need a helmet?

Having bought a car more 'suitable' for track days, I've seen a few people mention helmets, and seen some people driving wearing them.

In a tin-top car (OK, glasstop - it's an MR2 T-Bar), do I actually need one? i.e. Would it be required for safety rules or whatever? They seem damn expensive...

I take it you have never done a trackday before?

A helmet is absolutely mandatory. No-one will let you on-track without one.

I have two - one "open" (for in my Boxster) and one "full face" (for in Caterhams and the like).

Not only is it a safety precaution it serves to get one in the mood I find...

That may be so but think of the poor marshall or medic who gets to your car first after you have rolled several times, they would probably rather that you had spent more than 20 quid on your helmet as they try and find a container for your brain.

Local bike shops will have stuff from around £50 or most circuits can hire you one for about a tenner if you're not sure on how many track days you may end up doing.
