I'm looking to start a little side project website to collect information and stories from people that might one day end up in a book. What i'm looking to find out is how I get the rights to use the stories? I know the new PH rules said some like "anying posted on here is now the property of PH". Is that enough to cover future use of the stories? I'll be making it clear to people that their stories may be used in the future - I won't be trying to steal anything.

Thoughts please smile

Write it into the Ts & Cs.

Lots of people won't care. Some people will: like me for example. For the people who object you can put in a clause that says they own the IPR to their story but by submitting it to your site they grant you a perpetual licence to use the material for any purpose you want. This means they can still publish the story themselves but you can do so as well. Given they won't publish it should work out fine.

Almost everyone will agree to retaining ownership but granting a licence.

I think if you ask people to use their stories most will be delighted!

B3ta did something similar with their bumper book of sick jokes. All they did was get permission and everyone was clammering to get their joke or picture published. It has been very successful.

I'm currently putting together a book of recipes from all different nationalities from around the area which I live. People submit their recipe, we test them and choose the best and everyone is chuffed to be involved. Certainly not copyright problems.
