When I was cleaning it on Saturday I noticed a black stain on the paintwork from the exhausts. Anybody else noticed this on their car?

Polished it off several of mine. (a litre of oil every 1,000 miles has its effect!)

Yes I have, my car's silver & so it's easy to see.

I assumed it was someting to do with the aerodynamics.
After a long run it washes off easily, but if it's left it needs polishing to remove it.

Its a PITA.
Got a 2" longer set of pipes, if I ever get to fit them, which hopefully will solve the issue.

I used to have this problem too. To get it off, I found the best way was to use a little bit of meths on a rag followed by lots of water to get all traces of the meths off. To stop it happening, I had a set of exhaust tip extenders made up by JP through Tim @ ACT. These extend the exhaust tips by a 2 or 3 inches with some nice polished stainless tips which have stopped pretty much all traces. Problem solved!

Edit: I had them made up very similar to a Friends except his are on a Griff so probably of more use to you... You can just about see them on his profile pic if it helps: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/profile.asp?mem...

Could this have something to do with the fact that when I've had my jacket in the boot it smells of exhaust fumes when I take it out?

Is there anywhere the fumes can get into the boot?

I'd say that was more likely to be the fuel cap. On pre-cat cars there was no carbon canister and the tank venting was done via a vented fuel filler cap, perhaps the fumes are just escaping from here into the boot?

In the past a couple of people on here had something like this. It turned out that they were both having their cars serviced at the same place. That place was putting an oil additive that was causing the deposit.

If the boot lid seal isn't sealing right then exhaust gas can be drawn into the boot. That could be the source of the smell.

I had this problem after changing the oil & adding an oil additive. This burnt & left a grey mist on the rear

Bob has a point yes A griff will throw out more hydrocarbons if its a decat like FFG or has been decatted.
My solution to this has been to use longer extension pipes so get them fitted Paul smile

In a word
Yes

The boot seal basically doesn't do its job along the back edge of the boot.

I got mine to seal by adding another length of seal to the back lip of the boot lid itself, you then get rubber pushing against rubber and its seals a treat.

You mean precat Pasco?
Agree, I should get it fitted, had it since Growl 2006!!!
Although I have had bigger, longer rear pipes since then.
