I'm planning a European roadtrip in early June which will include some laps of the Nurburgring.
Has anyone else taken their Monaro around it? I'm obviously going to be taking it really easy, as I don't want to screw up the car for the rest of the trip! I'm aware that I'll probably get overtaken by nutters in minis, and chatting with some of the guys on saturday it seems a good idea to learn the track on a video game first - any other tips?

lookup ben lovejoys website. Has nearly all the information you'll need:

www.nurburgring.org.uk

Its a good trip, if only to see some of the mental kit ze germans play with down there (porsche engined VW transporters etc.) biggrin

use a video game by all means but the difference is amazing.

The track surface is rubbish and very bumpy and the elevation changes are way more dramatic.

Been there, done that. Great fun but take it easy and dont let the red mist take over! Games OK but nothing like the real thing! (it hurts and is expensive if you come off in real life!) Actually going over this weekend but in an old 325i sport E30 BMW, just to get some track - I mean toll road time in!
Try going there during the week as its a bit to popular at the weekends TBH and some folk cant drive to save their life!!
Another site to look at is "bridgetogantry", Bens site is OK but it bias towards train spotting a bit... although my picture is on there in full flight (E46 330sport though)smokin

Video game... Yeah right, that's why all the playstation heroes keep crashing their cars.. Flat in the game is a little different in a ton or so of car...

The only way to learn the Ring is to go round it, a lot.. That said, keep your wits about you, use your mirrors constantly and stay away from the max power morons...

I took the Mrs around with a boot full of luggage. Yes overtaken many times by all manner of nutters. Track was wet and my tyres were... well you get the picture. Slow and careful was the name of the game.
Id love to do it properly some time.

I'm sure you'll be sensible but as mentioned caution is the operative word.

Ego's to be left in the car park. If not for the sake of the car, damaged german Armco is charged by the foot, even if the paint is scratched. frown

Thanks for the links
Yep I'm aware of the need to be careful, I'm going with some mates in a Z4 and a tuned 200sx, so nothing to prove there We're going really just to tick it off the "list of things to do before you die"
We're also planning to go over some of the passes in the Alps, maybe even Stelvio, though yet to plan out that part. Not sure on taking the Monaro around tight twisty hairpins!

Olly, it is the hairpins that we go for! try and do it early in the day before the coach's get out there and enjoy. Took the RO out there a few weeks after buying her just to hear her through those long tunnels and deep ravines, but please take out the silencers before going, the locals love it!!!! Oh so does plod (whoops).

Tell you what, give us an idea when you are going to be at the ring and I might just see you down there.
