Afternoon all,

Sadly i'm not returning back to the Jap fold, but am enquiring for a forum-illiterate friend... (sorry Carl...lol)

He's looking to spend around £4k (probably a bit less for the 300ZX as it'll be older), and it has to be manual.

He just wants to know which is the most reliable, easiest to repair (he's a very competent mechanic), most economical, best for his daily commute (25miles each way), that sort of stuff.

I think i'd be looking for the Supra myself...

Any ideas?

300ZX are generally horrendous to work on, and have 2 oil filters that must be changed.
on is worse than the other, so the harder one is generally ignored.

the supra however is bombproof. (waits for Gaz to correct me).

not really informed on R33's

Which 300?

300zx (Assuming the Z32 turbo)
Supra (Assuming mk4)
GTS-t

I'd got for the 300zx TT .. If I had either of the others I'd be wanting the Supra TT or a GTR.

The 300 is a pig to work on, but I'd know I was at least at the top of the model lineup wink

If it's the NA 300zx, I'd go for the Supra. The reliability would swing it for me.

I think reliability and economy will win over outright performance for this guy. 240bhp(?) in the n/a Supra would be enough i'd say.

Thing is, the 300ZX TT would indeed piss off into the distance, but i'd still be happier in the Supra, as i think its a much nicer car...

220hp in the NA Supra.
It's NOT a quick car.

Yep.

I'd get the Skyline but I would not service it myself even if I knew how to. People will buy other cars over yours if they have something like a full Abbey service history.

I just don't *get* non GTR Skylines (like I don't get NA mk4 Supras).

And even then, only the C10, R32 and R34.

R33s in non GTR spec are just common to me.

I'd love a R32GTR though. I got close a few years back.

But an N/A Supra is a level down from an R33 GTS-T. The key bit is "T".

I "get" GTS-Ts because they are RWD and have a turbo so can be tuned up a bit/lot.

Does anyone know the mpg and 0-60 times for the n/a Vs TT versions of the Supra and 300?

Also the mpg of the R33 GTS-t?

i used to have a n/a supra. compared to a TT version yes it is slow, compared to 95% of everything else on the round it is not. bloody lovely car and totally bombproof never missed a beat not once. only bad thing it got keyed by some scrote.

silly question, but how daft would it be to buy a really really mint N/A mk4 supra, and supercharge it?

I seem to remember there being supercharger kits for the saloons that use the same engine?

The NA is still of a similar pace to a 330Ci I don't think anyone calls them slow.
I do .. 330cis are slow!
1460kg is heavy. 220bhp is poor.

The Aristo (GS300) was the car with the same engine. Didn't think there were any chargers for it though. Just dump in the GTE.

Tee hee ..

I know someone who stacked a UK mk4 (Turbo) and bought a targa NA (import) and swapped the engines. Was very nice. Not sure about chassis flex though.

personmally i would go for a GTST (but then i would as i am on my second) as the cost of tuning to around 350 - 400 (im at 340 at hubs) is cheap as ther'll easily take that on standard internals - over 400 gets more expensive, but the next for me will be a bigger turbo and a remap

GTST all the way with RWD turbos ruling the fun zone (for me i would rather have rwd than 4wd but thats my opinion and not matched by many)

I dunno about cheap tuning them to 400hp its cost me over £5k !!!

Z32 afm - £100
Power fc - £600
Boost controller - £250
FMIC - £400
740cc injectors - £500
Uprated fuel pump - £150
dump valve - £200
exhaust - £400
downpipe - £200
Elbow - £60
Decat - £50
plugs - £75
airfilter - £100
clutch - £350
coils = £250

plus labour and mapping for that lot at least £1500-£1800

then you need to do cosmetics , brakes , suspension etc etc easy to spend £10k on these cars and still have a average looking Skyline

150bhp extra for £5k isn't expensive... try that on an N/A car and see how far you get.
