If you're talking about an FIA type key switch, you need it in the +ve feed direct from the battery, and in order for it to work properly you mustn't wire anything else taking power straight off the battery (ie bypassing the switch).
You also really want a switch with the additional contacts so you can send it all to ground when it's switched with the engine running, otherwise you risk frying the electrics due to the charge from the alternator having nowhere to go.
This is how I wired mine, the three switches are actually all in the FIA switch casing, one is the hefty +ve feed connector, the other two are the spade connections, one which is closed when the key is armed, the other is open....
