PRACTICAL CLASSIC - UNDER £2000

Hi

What "practical" classic could you buy that has some kudos and poke and also something you could drive everyday?

Mark 1 or 2 Golf GTI.
Porsche 944.

I would personally go for a nice mk2 golf GTI.

Mk3 Capri. £2k should get you a nice 2 litre...........or a tired 2.8 injection.

Alfa 75 TSpark.

You'd get a very clean example for your money and mechanically they're absolutely bomb-proof.

Saab 900?
How about something very rare- Ford Scorpio (the ugly one)
Any 80s BMW
Any 80s Japanese sports car

If you choose somethign from the 70s, it will be that mush older and probably more unreliable.

Another vote here for a mk2 Golf GTI. I got a one recently and can highly recommend them

Corrado VR6 - no question. Better to spend more but there have been some OK ones go on EBay for under 2k.

For sub-£2k? Unless you find a real bargain it would probably need work. The less popular 924 is entirely realistic at that price though. Even the 924S (which basically is the 944 mechanicals in a lighter, slipperier shell).

Other ideas - Beetle, maybe? Chevette (depends on your definition of classic I suppose!) I'd say the Crapi was quite a good bet, although the better examples of those are starting to get quite expensive I believe.

edit: can you get a Starion for that sort of price? Oversteer-tastic.

Do you have any problems getting parts for yours? I was given a 3.0l V6 Cloverleaf a few years back that needed a clutch, could'nt get one from most places, best I could do at the time was about £500 odd.

Still got those alloys and wing if you want them Steve.

+1, for the MK2 GTi, you should get quite a nice one for £2k, good luck finding an unmolested one.

I've probably had 4 or 5 over the last 10 years, all mint, all standard... and run them into the ground as daily driving hacks....
