GTR or GT40 Replica / Nurburgring Laps / 4WD GTR Questions
Discussion
hi
the ultima GTR and the GT40 have been my favourite cars for a long time now but if i had the money i dont know which one i would buy
i know the replies i get in this forum are going to be biased but i would like to know, because the the GT40 is a beautiful car but can you spend around £60k on a gt40 to get it to perform nearly as well as a gtr on a track?
Speaking of tracks how come no one has taken an ultima around the nurburgring to record a proper lap driven by a professional who knows the ring well? (Horst von Saurma, Sabine Schmitz)
im curious but why dont many people do 4wd gtr's (i think a company has already done one)would it handle worse than it handles with RWD or is it a space issue to it being mid-engined?
i ask because wouldnt they be much faster and be able to put more power down on the road? especially if they have a setup similar to the prodrive p2.

That's the 4WD question addressed.
I should think that these two cars figure quite highly on most people's mid engined big V8 wish list. But they have very different philosopy. The GT40 is a replica of a legend and to do it justice, shirley you have to be true to the original, therefore making it a labour of love and it will be measured upon it's accuracy as much as it's performance? The Ultima is no copy, it a self assy supercar that owners can customise to suit their needs.
I'd say you are either one person or the other, difficult to be both - which are you?
PS. That's a trick question BTW. The fact that you consider both means that you aren't just a slave to building a replica, but would consider the 'interesting' looks of an Ultima. Job done, get an Ultima and worry now about the spec, and colour.......Gulf blue and orange????

From a personal point of view, who cares? From a factual point of view, this scenario may be closer to reality than any of us could imagine

what i mean is if i build a kit made by a GT40 replica manufacturer such as tornado or CAV, will the car be any good on the track.
also when i ask my self the question about the GTR or GT40 i always come up with 2 different answers and they are:
if you want a car which could perform brilliantly on a track get an ultima, but if you want a beautiful car get a GT40 replica, thats why i am asking if i can get a gt40 kt which could perform on a track instead of just looking good (didnt like the look of the ultima but its grown on me)
GTWayne that was a cryptic last sentence, care to shed some light on it?

Nothing to get over excited about really but there may be a trip involving an Ultima or two going to the ring latter this year. Times?, well, I can't really see there being the right circumstances to lay anything meaningful down but apparently, so I have heard, one owner is a little on the well known side with regards to the Shmidt family so you never know
.With regards to your situation and in trying to make the right choice I would say that you need to ask yourself honestly how much time you think you and the car will actually spend on track?
Most owners that I know would love to track their cars but in reality, few actually do ( me included )
Having the right car is just the beginning IMO. You need to consider: Money, time, ability, enthusiasm, moral and a whole host of other factors and you may still be no closer to making a decision on the matter. I know folk that have owned both vehicles, one after the other and maybe they could give you a bit more insight. The one person that I am thinking of is GTRClive and he gets on here now and then so good luck
you have a very good point wayne
i would like to take my car to a track but truthfully i cant see myself at a track regularly
well if i take track work out of the question, then the choice is really a no brainer for me
which is to get a GT40 replica from a good manufacturer such as Tornado or CAV
(would gtr owners agree that a gt40 is better looking than the ultima)

Are you totally CRAZY or just practising, if a GTR owner thought a GT40 was better looking than a GTR then we would all have GT40's. A GT40 kit is a copy of an oringinal, an Ultima is out on its own.
I can never understand why people buy Ferrari replicas I have never seen a good one yet, if you can't afford the real thing, go for something different.

subtle as ever mate!! I do agree though but i think the Kit car market is so diverse it caters for everyones taste. I do think GT40s are lovely, but no i would sooner have an Ult, as Russ said on its own!!I can never understand why people buy Ferrari replicas I have never seen a good one yet, if you can't afford the real thing, go for something different.

GT40 is a great looking car.. but imho if youre gonna build it it has to be a TRUE replica.. down to every detail. One owner i spoke to spent months filing out the rain water grooves/holes on the rear of the cockpit.. if youve got that sort of dedication/time/money then fair do's.
Or you can have the timeless indivdual look of the GTR, a 'quantifable' budget and a estimate of the time you need to spend building it to get the car you want.
at the end of the day when everybody asks you what is is you can say 'its an ultima gtr', rather than 'no its not a real one'.

i ask because wouldnt they be much faster and be able to put more power down on the road? especially if they have a setup similar to the prodrive p2.
Getting the dampers and springs right is quite a hard job. It's not getting easier when the power can be delivered to both axles. All wheel drive means more parts, more parts mean more money and more chances of failure.i ask because wouldnt they be much faster and be able to put more power down on the road? especially if they have a setup similar to the prodrive p2.
And all that before you might even think of being faster with all wheel drive. And in case of the ultima you won't be. A proper AWD system weighs alot, a not so proper (and lighter) AWD system doesn't weigh so much, but it's not getting you anywhere. A proper (read: torque vectoring capable) AWD system is quite heavy and quite large and quite complicated. Heavy, large and complicated equals expensive. Lighter systems like the one used on Porsche 911s of the 996 series aren't giving you much of an advantage, their reactions are too slow and they are a bit unsteady because they are not electronically controlled. A proper AWD system will add 100 or even 120 kilos which equals to 8 to 10% of the whole cars weight. Adding more power to make full use of the traction advantage means the drivetrain needs to be stronger, too, which adds weight again. With todays tires and suspensions the traction advantage ain't that big anymore as it was in the 80s when Audi won the IMSA championship.
Before you ask: torque vectoring means beeing able to shift power between the two wheels at the same axle. That is what sets the Prodrive P2 apart. Or does it?
Well, no. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evo is torque vectoring capable since 1996. The Honda Legend since 2004. BMW introduced the new X-Drive last year - with torque vectoring. Even Saab cars are now available with a torque vectoring rear diff on their AWD cars.
so guys
if you had a choice of buying a ford GT or a gt40 replica which one would you pick?
i mean not a lot of people can afford the real thing can they?
also is there a release date for the ultima gtr 800, and do you think ultima will bring out new another car in the next couple years?
