Places to stay in the York area?

I'm considering a night away on the 15th with the missus (her birthday, I'm well prepared, as you can tell) - apart from Wood Hall, I know the Chequers Inn on the B1224 does cracking grub, what's the accommodation like - price and quality?
Failing that, are there any little gems that aren't too expensive?
