I'm refreshing the brakes on my Evo, and have ordered new OEM discs all round.

On top of that, I'm going to fit Pagid RS29s front and rear. I had these on the front of my 328i and they were great on track, but I used OEM spec rear pads - will using them front and rear mess up the brake balance at all?

No not at all.
The front brakes work consideralbly harder than the rears anyway so you should only notice a slight improvement in braking performance - nothing detremental.

Only thing to note is that you may get some squealing and sometimes with hard use the uprated pads can outclass the discs causing warping owing to the temperature they can handle.

EDIT - but im sure you know that owing to your previous experience.

Thanks - the last set of RS29s I had squeeled unbelievably loudly on the road, but I used them with Zimmerman x-drilled discs, which weren't great.

Without going down the BBK route there don't seem to be any better spec discs for an M3 Evo than OEM ones, unless someone can correct me?

OK,

The Pagids RS29's are undoubtedly your best bet. They are the yellow endurance pads which are possibly the best compromise for a road/track car and they will last a decent length of time too. I've fitted a set of RS42's to my Evo and they are perhaps a little too aggressive for the road. They will be awesome on Track (I go to the 'Ring in 4 days woohoo) but the wear rate is excessive, they chew the discs to bits and they squeal unbelievably loud. They do however stop you like no single pison caliper has any right to.

The most important thing however, is to stick with genuine OEM discs. They are a little bit more expensive (about £240 for the fronts IIRC) but they are floating discs whereas most of the aftermarket drilled and grooved tosh from Zimmerman et al are solid items. This is why they warp.

OEM discs will withstand a huge amount of punishment and will outlast cheaper alternatives as a result. Ignore all this crap about drilled/grooved discs being superior as it is just that, crap.

OEM discs should be arriving tomorrow, and the Pagids on Wednesday.

I did consider going for the RS42s, but I had enough squealing from the 29s last time, and driving around London with that kind of noise tends to make people stare!

I'm intrigued as to how good a setup it will be. I guess I'll find out at Bedford on the 24th - I've always been tempted by an AP setup but wonder how much of an improvement it'd be. I'll try this, and then the next step will be to replace the fogs with cooling ducts.

First job is to get the car back from Bexley though!

They do squeal but then they are actually pukka race pads. A BBK will give you benefits but are those benefits worth the £2k price tag? Unless I get serious fade with the current set-up I'm inclined to think not

My thoughts exactly. £2k better spent on a (decentwink) carbon airbox and mapping.

Indeed. I'll be resolving that little issue tomorrow.

Don't suppose anyone has feedback on fitting brake cooling ducts?

The ones I've seen are on CA Automotive - any tangible benefit from fitting them? Thinking for trackdays really (and I've cracked both my fogs so ditching them is no biggie!).

I was told in no uncertain terms by several race suppliers (thorney and taffyracer) that only replacing the front bads will bugger up the brake balance and that you should replace front AND rears.

Thanks for all the comments guys - I've now got 4 new OEM discs and front and rear Pagid RS29s sitting here on my desk, ready for fitting this weekend yum

You should change the fluid for 4 (if tracking lots) or 5.1 if uprating to those pads too so I'm told.

And fit the braided brake hoses while you're at it. A very cheap mod and well worth it.

Tempted to do something about my brakes too for the occasional Nürburgring trip, but £2k on a BBK seems a bit much for the relatively infrequent occasions I go.

I would be very interested in how you get on with the Pagid pads, my biggest concerns are about how they perform day to day (from cold) as I use my car for commuting, and also how noisy they are - I'd rather not compromise the car too much...

Keep us posted.

Thanks,

Pete.

Guy - braided brake and clutch lines fitted, and 5.1 fluid put in today courtesy of Bexley Motors. Already noticed a massive difference in feel. Just need to fit the discs and pads this weekend.

Peter - I ran Pagid RS29s on my old 328i, they were great from cold but they did squeal a lot. I was using pretty crappy discs with them though which wouldn't have helped. But, the flip side is they're awesome at stopping the car! I'll let you know how they are on the M3 once I've got them on.

As an aside, I love the bedding in instructions that come with the Pagids - they recommend a few hard stops from 110mph - 80mph. Guess that'll be reserved for the track then biggrin
