Hello,

I'm having to move to the Bristol area due to work so I want to know what areas are nice places to live. I'll be renting a 3/4 bed house for a while and then buying in due course.

I'd like to be away from the city but still within decent train/bus route to get there and also I need easy access to motorways.

I have a 15 y.o. who will need a 6th form college too. Any good ones I should know of?

Is Filton and area to avoid? I see the big runway but don't know if it is used that often.

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks

Okay I'll probably get abuse for this. But Bradley Stoke seems a nice enough area out of town.

No you're right - like Christina Aguilera, nice parts.

Westbury on Trym was OK and I trust it still is.

I'd avoid St Pauls but each to their own.

Bath if you can!

6th form - state or fee paying? I can recommend some either way, and certainly tell you where to avoid!

Bradley Stoke, Downend, Frenchay and Emerson Green, all near to ring road and M32 in to City

Yep.

Okay people might say it's a bit 'estatey' but for a convenient, safe/nice, area for a family. It's pretty good I reckon.

My only issue was that because it's a new'ish/ modern estate it lacked nice old pubs etc.

Bath is lovely, but getting between there and Bristol during the rushhours etc is pretty stressful. Traffic in Bath city center is really bad at rush hour. Steep hills and stop start traffic make for a pain in the ass.

Downend, Emersons Green and Frenchay are nice in different ways. Frenchay is probably the most expensive of the three. Emersons Green is mostly new(ish) build. All close enough to the M32 which leads to M5/M4.

That'll be Stoke Bishop (just in case anyone needs to put it in a search engine)

All the above have several good 6th forms nearby, and if the OP wanted to go further out of Bristol, then Hambrook, Winterbourne, Almondsbury, Thornbury are all near to good 6th forms. With these I would again add Downend and Frenchay, for low level of crime together with good stock of pre 1930's sound proofed housing.

I live in Yate, which all those who don't live here will say is rubbish. It has enough in the way of nice houses, enough shops to not need to go elsewhere for the weekly shop. Free parking at the shops as well. If you need more the Mall at Cribbs is not far away with cinemas and eating places, there is also lesuire facilities at Longwell green again not far away. If you are the type who gets injured with your hobby (car building in my case) the hospital A&E is not far away but good Doctors in the town.
You have a train staion with frequent services, you are minuets from M4 M32 and M5. School wise you have very good six forms at Chipping Sodbury, and if languages are your bag Catherine Lady Berkley is a school bus ride away.
You have easy acess to Filton colleage or the University of the West, good sports centre facilities as well. As with all areas there are some rougher areas but genrally okay. I moved here 21 years ago and would recommend you have a look.
Best bit Castle Coombe just up the road and within 5 miles you have some of the best roads to stretch your cars legs in the area.

Not entirely sure what the area is like, but Nailsea always appears to be a decent place for transport links etc.

I used to have customers in and around Bristol (I live in South Wales), so always did Nailsea first thing in the morning, as you avoid all the traffic coming off the M4 into Bristol City centre.

Never had any issues getting from Nailsea into the city, either.

Hey Garycat,

Welcome to Brizzel - I moved here about 2 years ago and though it was from the dead end that is Salisbury, I LOVE it here.
There's so much happening, especially if you like arty things and music.

There are many nice areas, but they tend to be next door to rough ones so don't be put off if you have to drive though a messy bit to get there.

I've bought in an area called Redfield, which is ment to be a rough under privilaged area as it was cheap to buy my first place. I have to say, its great. Mostly couples and young family. We have our fair amount of Chavs but they aren't too much trouble and the house prices are still going up! This is why I would recommend Redfield. We just bought our second just before the crash and I shat myself, but I need not have worried.

Now in the last two years there have suddenly been 3 delis, 2 nice coffee shops and a restraunt open up on our road and I'm chuffed.

When you move - if you want to meet some new people and be shown around our fair town let me know as I'm part of a group for Bristol newbies!

Used to live in Downend and my nan, until her recent demise, lived in Kingswood.

Both ok as it goes. Nothing special but nothing particularly bad either.
