E90 towbar and electrical adapter

Help please.
Am trying to fit the adapter to the factory tow bar...it comes with a European socket - and was given the adapter by my dealer. It looks like it is a push and twist fit however in trying to fit it the old spring loaded electric cover is in the way. Is there a knack to this or do you have to remove the original electric cover?
(Hopefully all that makes sense)
