E92 330d Economy issues
Discussion
Just bought an E92 330D M-Sport Touring. Love the car, but only getting an average economy of 32.5mpg according to the OBC over the last 600 miles. Best achieved so far is 38mpg on a long run. How does this compare to other peoples experiences? Is something wrong? If I get it re-mapped by DMS or similar will the economy improve?(And what sort of gains would I be likely to see?) Sorry for the list of questions, but was led to believe I should be getting nearer to 40mpg overall. BTW the car is an auto.
If economy was an issue (which you are implying it is) did you not consider the smaller diesel unit?
It is a 6 cylinder afterall and it could be ones driving thats the issue. As mentioned above the more miles covered the more the MPG will tend towards the specified values.
But if I was concerned about economy the 2 litre unit would have been my first choice.

I've been tooling around in a new 330d auto. And getting less than 30mpg (to be fair though it is a combo of town and spirited driving).
The 330d is only economical vs a 330i petrol. Even though it is diesel it is still a heavily turbo charged 3.0ltr lump. I often hear and read so much about "my x30d is great - porsche rivalling performance but sill get 50mpg!" Don't believe a word of it myself. They are good engines and certainly have good performance but you'll pay for that in consumption. I guess you can nurse the mpg up to the top end of the manufacturers stats, but if thats the objective I'd buy the four-banger. Even when I had a 320d manual it averaged 42mpg - and that was over the course of a year with a lot of motorway work.

320d I had on the same commute did 44/45 easy but made be cry with coredom when I drove it.The 330d is only economical vs a 330i petrol. I think my commute is pretty crap though - mix of regular round-a-bouts and junctions so lots of stop, up to high speed, stop again etc. On a recent long run the car did 41 with me at the helm.
My current E46 330d (manual) has 47.1 for consumption1 and 45.2 for consumption2. The first figure relates to a 3 weeks of M40 usage at "outside lane of M40" speeds and the lower figure is an overall average. The car has done 74k miles.
Guess my motorway mileage is skewing the average figure a little, but anyone getting low to mid 30's from a 330d must be clogging it like a nutter or doing many short stop/start town trips.

With a manual E92 M Sport 330d I've managed managed 55 mpg on a 50 mile run with only 200 miles on the clock from new, and it's averaged 44 mpg over the first 750 miles. 550 miles on the first tank of fuel which is acceptable. Maybe the manual box is a lot more efficient than the auto but I'd say it's pretty economical.

Ive said it before - thats fantastic economy from an amazing engine. You might be interested to know that Seat have just released the Ibiza with the 1.4 tdi 3 cylinder unit. The gearing on this 5 speeder is crazy 5th = 52mph/1000rpm.... top speed has it just over 2000rpm in 5th. Mind you the upside is 90mpg extra urban and clearly near on idle cruising.
No performance car clearly but this is showing the other end of the scale for these speeds.

I'd be amazed if it could pull that gearing. Don't the 3.0l diesel BMWs pull something like 33mph/1k revs?No performance car clearly but this is showing the other end of the scale for these speeds.

Im guessing your much more used to petrol mph/rpm hence the confusion.
