I need to buy travel insurance (today) but everything I find online has a limit of around £100 per item. No good if a £400 body and £800 lens get stolen.

What do you guys recommend?

See what you get on your home contents insurance. Lots of these give you some cover for your kit whilst on holiday.

Home insurance cover is a good way, but as with the holiday policies check the max single item amounts. I named all our expensive kit item by item on the house policy. Cost a fair bit more but still much cheaper than a separate policy.

We're looking to add my new camera equipment to our home insurance.

I also priced up a "Photoguard" policy - for me it would be about £120 a year including 30 days in the EU covering my equipment for both accident and theft even from an unattended vehicle. I'll see if the home insurance will cover it otherwise I'm going to have to consider the "Photoguard" thing.

Do check small print very carefully. Many policies do not cover camera gear locked in car boot at certain times of day, some offer no cover at any time.

I've got Photo-Shield policy (photographic division of Winsover Howden Insurance Brokers Ltd). Premises/UK and 45 days Worldwide. All equipment covered during working day in an unattended vehicle, with only non-photographic equipment covered after working day up to 06:00 the following day.

Individual camera insurance is probably the best thing to do. I have seen some affordable deals floating about.

I'd go with a dedicated kit insurer.

Specify all risks and pay the premium accordingly - it may be a bit painful but if you have a few hundred (or thousands) worth of kit, which situation would you rather be in:

1) Something happens on holiday, and you think, well I know that's covered on my policy

2) Something happens on holiday, and you think, I hope that my household policy will pick up the tab for that...

I have a bit of kit now, so I have chosen the first one - not a fortune, but about a pound a day for the risks I have listed, my value of kit and the fact I wanted public liability & professional indemnity insurances as well.

If you decide to use Photogard, then I have a referral code that apparently earns a few quid for me if you use itwink - I'll gladly go halves with you!

Got a gig at Hylands House then?!wink

NB If you want public liability, I'm sure some fellow PHers will be only too happy to turn up, get tanked up and start falling into cakes etc? hehe

hehe

Nothing at Hylands House, but it was asked about by a couple of venues now (and is required for a "ye olde crafte fayre" thing I'm considering)

Not vast amounts extra per month, and as I want to go and take photos of a mate's Dax Rush at a trackday I figured it may grease the wheels of getting on the other side of the fencewink

You need public liability to access some venues and some companies won't entertain you without insurance up to a seemingly huge sum.

Avoid E&L like the plague...too many horror stories about them when people have tried to claim!
