Dear all,
I have been toying between a cobra rep and a griff.......however aside from the obvious I have a question.
I get the impression the serpentine and borg warner box are the ones to go for - so on a 94 griff (have my eye on one) how do I tell if it has the above. is there a serial no. change over or???

any help welcome - and aside from chassis issues anything else to look for?

Hi Craig
Get a Griff, you know it makes sensewink

as for the gear box and serp/pre-serp options, you'll find as many owners who favour one type as you will the other.
The early LT77 gear box has a reputation for being weak, but you'll be hard pushed to find someone has has actually braken one in a std car.
Serp engines however do have a better oil pump/filter setup, and they are less prone to the auxillary belt slipping and sometimes actually coming off.
LT77 box has the reverse gear far left and fowards, the T5 reverse is right and back. I've owned both, and actually prefer the smoother gear change of the LT77 box.
Serp engines have a different front cover to the engine and has a wide flat ancillary belt with 7 groove. Pre-serps have an old school "V" belt.

Will almost certainly have a borg warner `box (reverse bottom right, if you follow me) and if the belt in the engine bay is wide and flat...its a serpentine! If it is narrow...pre serpentine.

However, would buy on condition not if its serp or not, really. My 500 is borg warner `box mated to pre serp engine. April 1994.

Hope that helps....

Dave.

i have owned a cobra rep and now own a 94 griff 500 which is pre serp with a t5 g/box

imho t5 box is better than earlier ones but who really knows

i have been v.happy with a car that you take the roof off when the weather is good (griff) rather than a car
that needs a roof put up when the weather is bad (cobra)

every tvr is valued/bought on condition so get advice when buying

Ditto.

If you buy a Griff, you're buying the original. If you buy the Cobra you're always going to know you didn't. Some people may be bothered, others not.

Get yourself to the local TVRCC meeting. See a selection of cars.

The fact you're asking about a specific year suggested you may be looking at a particular car. Don't rush into the first one you see. Many people get carried away.
