draining transmission fluid

I've just discovered that my S2 had no oil in it so poured in some lovely 10/60 to top it up.

speaking to the chap at the garage he thinks that if I drain my transmission fluid and replace it with automatic transmission fluid it will make my gear changes easier.

Anyone know how to drain the transmission fluid and where the top up thing is?

I'm pretty sure that there is only a topup plug on the side of the gearbox and there isn't a drain plug.
To drain it you'd have to put a tube in the topup hole and syphon it out or something, maybe using an old pump of somesort to suck it out.
Shoot me if I'm wrong.

I had a look in Steve Heaths bible and there isn't a drain plug. Steve suggested using a cooking baster thing which I think is like a big syringe into the topup hole to get the oil out. I'm guessing that a motor accessory shop might sell something to do this or it might be worth asking a local garage how they would do it.

Never drained oil from a manual gearbox in my life. Keep it topped up with the right oil.

Replacing with Auto fluid may well make the gear changes easier. Don't think it will make the gearbox last longer though...

check my comments on TVRCC forum wrt oil. There is plenty on this subject on the following forum wrt GL4 vs GL5 spec (I have GL4 in mine) but it says there DO NOT USE ATF UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES"

My car has ATF in it as it had when I got it and it had all been main dealer servicing until then. It has now done 102k and the g'box is fine so I don't understand the above although the perceived wisdom is apparently to use the GL4.
