What is the spec of the front brake caliper bolt?
Discussion
I had a major league chuffing fright tonight chaps.
While I was out enjoying the sun I heard a ruddy great clang under the car but just dismissed it as something I'd driven over, but as i applied the brakes to stop at traffic lights there was a horrible clanging noise.
I couldn't see anything wrong on inspection but had a gut feeling the problem was related to the nearside front brake so I made up my mind to limp home anyway.
I managed most of the 15 mile trip up the M1 without any other problems, but when I got close to home there was another load of clanging and I did the last couple of miles at about 10mph.
I went to put the car into the garage but it wouldn't go backwards
Anyway, long story short and all that, my neighbour helped me inch the car backwards into the garage, and when I took off the NSF wheel I found the top brake caliper bolt missing and the bottom one loose
God knows what happened. I'm usually paranoid about tightening the bolts up and always nip them one last time with the hammer 'just in case'
Anyway, everything looks ok, except now I'm short a bolt and a spacer from 5ltr spec front caliper.
Me and Mrs B. will try to track one down tomorrow so I can still use the Griff on Friday, but we only have 1 bolt and spacer as a physical reference. So can anyone tell me the spec of the 500 front caliper bolts so I can phone around garages near where I work.
And I will be using loctite in future

Conveniently for you I know exactly where my old braking kit is in the garage! The fasteners are M10X30 HTS hex socket screws, readily available from any local specialist nut and bolt supplier (DIY type suppliers won't stock high tensile which you need as they are done up FT!)
Spacers are 4.40 mm thick with a 22 mm OD and a 10mm clearance hole.

Hi Barreti
Did you notice any clicking coming from the brakes prior to the crunch as my brakes have been clicking for a while now and i was thinking somthing may be loose, also where exactly are the spacers? as i opened the calipers up last week to see if i could locate where the click was coming from without much success and didnt notice any spacers
Thanks
Rich

Duly Noted and added to the shopping list GroomVroom - thanks.
There wasn't anything to give me a clue this was going to happen slideways. In fact just 5 minutes earlier I had a major brake test (and thought exactly that) when the guy in front of me braked from 60mph to 20mph to avoid a pheasant - and don't even get me started on those bleeding things
The spacer sits between the lug on the hub upright and the caliper lug - to push the caliper out a bit to get the offset correct for the rotor (disc)
Don't worry if you don't have one, if the caliper fits to the hub and the rotor still turns and looks correctly aligned everything is OK - although I stand to be corrected on that by any of the engineers on here.

I think it depends on the rotor/disc offset, when I changed the discs for groved and drilled ones on the Chim, I had to move the spacer to the back of the bracket (like a washer) or the disc/caliper alignment was out, still had to use the spacer otherwise the bolt ended up to long. On my Griff, of the same vintage, the spacers went back in thier original position despite the discs comong from the same supplier. Just a note to say I am dead impressed with EBC Red Stuff pads.Don't worry if you don't have one, if the caliper fits to the hub and the rotor still turns and looks correctly aligned everything is OK - although I stand to be corrected on that by any of the engineers on here.

Just done a search and found this thread,
I’ve just had exactly the same experience as Barreti. This evening I was due to go out for on a local club run, so took the Griff to work this morning and filled her up on the way. During the drive in I could hear and feel the occasional metallic rattle and it bothered me. So once at work I cancelled my attendance on the run.
Got home from work (only a few miles) and the rattle was getting worse had a good look round kicked the tyres etc. and decided to drive around a bit to get a better idea where it was coming from. Then a mile up the road, bang, as hit the brakes only doing about 20 mph it felt like the front wheel had come off. Crawled home without using the brakes to find the front drivers side calliper bottom bolt and spacer missing with the top one hanging out.
Last time I had the calliper off was back in March, but the first sign of the noise was defiantly this morning. I too always make sure these bolts are well tight, so I must assume I’d only put them in finger tight and forgot to nip up
am I getting to old ?

Just avoid the green Loctite, you'll never get them undone!
