We've got a 163bhp XC90 which used to be the wifes, she never had any problem with it.

We've now changed her car but kept the XC90 as the family bus as there really is nothing to beat it for the money, so I'm driving it a bit now and hence it NEEDS some more go!

I tried one of those plug in boxes that adjust the common rail pressure signal and thus up the common rail pressure, but that was crap. It wen't wrong when it was hot, the engine ECU threw a wobbly and left the wife at the side of the road.

So I want a proper re-map job done. I seem to recall there was a Volvo tuning company in Northampton or somewhere but I can't find them.

Any recommendations of where to get a proper job done near Derby?

Richard,

Is the PPC mod a proper re-map or does it just up the common rail pressure?

As I mentioned I have tried one of those and the results were not stunning.

Bertie,

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for, but I know a company that reprogram your ECU and give a decent improvement on performance.
They use Upsolute chips and quote a power increase from 163 to 193 for your engine. I'll be using them myself soon to chip the D5.

Hi Bertie

The ppc is a proper upgrade and has sold many units WE have never had an unhappy customer with one smile

WE offer a full money back guarantee if you are not 100 % happy smile

If your XC90 is a 163 bhp it will give you 196 Bhp

How does the re-map affect the offical Volvo warranty?

Not at all in my case, the car's over 3 years old! biggrin

However, if there was an issue within warranty and they found out, bang, no warranty.

Can you give me a bit more detail of how it works?

Is it a unit that uploads a new program into the flash memory via the CAN bus?

What does it alter? Common rail pressure / fueling map/ turbo boost? I assume it's an electonic waste gate?

I know I'm being cautious and I'm sure it's not, but I've been caught by bullst, bodges and pseudo science before and don't wish to again!

It only affects it, if they find out. I know of people who've had brand new top end mercs, BM's and Porsche's chipped. I had my mondeo done and they never picked it up at a service...although a mechanic did once comment that t seemed quite "lively"wink

This interest me - as I'm about to buy a 2006 XC90 D5 auto SE...

By my reckoning this should be the 185 engine?

What would I get on this from a remap?

Also will it make my economy any better when it's not being driven hard?

Hi Bertie

Sorry for the delayed reply the Rica PPC keeps the rail pressure at standard levels it only adjust the fueling and boost pressures to safe levels have a search on ANY volvo forum and ask about the Rica ppc they are a very good piece of kit smile

Just for completeness I thought I'd report back.

As Richard knows I bought a Rica PPC remap from him, it installed no problem at all, very easy indeed.

The results are stunning!

It's so much smoother and a whole lot more lively, seriously, much more meaty.

As a bonus it seems to be doing better MPG than before, presumably because you don't have to gun it as much because it has so much more torque.

I'm well chuffed and would have no hesitation in recommending it.

I am very happy, it's so much nicer to drive.

By the way, it's Robert, not Richard, but I've been called worse!

So, do you have any official figures, or is it just that it feels much better?
Also, could anyone else comment on how much better (if at all) a remaped 163 is, compared to a standard 185 D5?

The re-map takes it from 163 bhp to 198 bhp but much more importantly from 340nm to 435nm of torque.

It's torque that accelerates you, power is just torque x rpm.

Check out the website, it has before and after rolling road graphs.

http://www.rica.nl/chiptuning/showupgrade.php?Merk...

Or phone Russell and have a chat, if you don't like it you can revert back to normal and send it back.

But it really is fantastic, not just more powerful, much smoother too.
