Been in contact with the seller of this & it turns out the engine was changed, has done 50k
& so has the car which i find odd unless the engine was changed before the car had done any miles.
He also cannot supply any reciepts for the engine work & has very limited service history.
Just be aware that he is very reluctant to answer questions.

I thought it was funny when i saw the ad. It is not a 111s but has a VVC engine which would suggest engine change.

I can understand why an engine may have been changed but i dont understand how both the engine from a different car & car has done exactly the same miles..... It was decided for me when he couldnt supply any receipts for the engine work & he didnt like all the questions i was asking & he told me he had sold it.. scratchchin

Thats the thing though isnt it, if it does not feel right or fit together paperwork wise then just walk away with any car you are looking at. It may all be genuine but if anyone came to look at mine (if i were selling) i would be able to answer all questions confidently and provide large amounts of documentation. An Elise is an enthusiasts car and i think that most have a wealth of documentation with them.

2 engines that have done the same mileage possible, but again i would have thought documentation to prove it.

As I always say if it's cheap it's cheap for a reason!

Strange why someone would attempt to advertise a car such as that on a enthusiasts site

I've always looked after my car's kept all receipts etc etc etc, I expect a good re-sale value in return

Receipts are a must! Do you think i went ott in keeping my V Power fuel receipts?
Although my S1 sold immediately so i must have done something right.

and that is what a buyer wants to see. I would pay a little more to get a genuine well looked after car with bags of paperwork.

I didn't go quite that far (although I did start, but it was getting daft), but I do have the receipts for all the cleaning products (just don't tell the OH, if she find it and sees how much it was, I'm dead).

It's not that bad. He's not hiding the engine change, mainly because there is no point as it's not a 111S. Why worry about a receipt for an engine change. It's been done, what else do you want to know that receipt will tell you ?

I was only really concerned with him not being able to confirm how many the miles the car had done. Yes the engine has done 50k but at what point was this changed? Has the car done 100k ? This is where he failed to deliver.

well, as it's not exactly easy to re-set the oddo, I suspect the car has done the 50K not the engine...

easy to check, look at the SN on the back of the stack, it should match the chassis number, if not, it's been changed (for whatever reason)

I think that is Boobles point, the VVC engine MAY have done 100k you just dont know and i think that is what would put people off.

The guy was clearly hiding something as everytime i asked something, he swiftly moved onto the subject of my car.

I'm with Scuffers here, I don't see what the problem is. The price is good for a 50k miles car and the fact it has had an engine swap is hardly a problem. It's high on my agenda to have a VVC unit put in my car... I'll do most of the work so there wouldn't be many receipts...

Hardly a reason to flag it up here as a bad car... Nice attitude to have from one Lotus owner to another..

Have you read what ive been saying Mark B?
My problem was the fact that he was very reluctant to answer any questions! Would you buy a car from somebody that didnt want to answer anything & intsead of being honest & saying he didnt no sweet f a about the car, he completely dodged around the question & that is why i put this thread up here! Are all Lotus owners geniune Mark? I very much doubt it & im sorry if i have deluded your ideal world of Elise owners.

Sorry, I'm not deluded about all Lotus owners, I just think it is a little harsh to make a point of flagging up someones car that he is trying to sell on.

I have no idea what questions you were asking, so didn't want to comment on that.

Seems a little unnecessary to flag up a car and the owner on a world wide forum which is linked to his advertising media. I tend to agree about the dodging questions, but some people struggle to admit they know nothing, this guy might be one such person.

After all, 50k miles, service history or no service history any buyer needs to check the car sufficiently to part with their money. Service Histroy is only the start, after 8 years and 50k miles the car could be excellent or a shed, FSH could be meaningless.

To be honest, after my experience with this guy i just wanted to make people aware that he is/was very reluctant to answer any "normal" questions to which we ALL would ask when buying an Elise. Sometimes trying to do the right thing is the wrong thing to do on here!

What specific questions would he not answer ? The odo and the ad says 50K,so when you asked if the chassis has done 50K, he said ...? Nothing wrong with talking about a car in the ads on PH, but saying 'be very aware' is possibly a little strong without full details.

I think comparing advice about actual businesses is slightly different to nailing some bloke trying to sell his car for not being able to answer simple questions or that the thing has had an engine swap... Something that quite a number of S1 owners would like to do as it's a very cheap way of getting good power.

I wasn't having a go at Boobles, I was just questioning his decision to make it public with a warning of 'Be Very Aware of this'. There's ultimately nothing really wrong with the car is there?
