Just a word of warning for anyone who has one of the first HSV VT2's. I got mine new in 2000 and didn't have it undersealed/waxoiled from new. It is my daily runner and is kept outside. Although the body is in fine condition now it has a lot of surface rust along the main box sections underneath and has actually gone right through at the front by the engine frame mounting next to the exhaust manifold. I know its my own fault ( w**nk*r) but if you haven't bothered with looking after the underneath nows the time to go for it. I think all these troubles are entirely down to the excessive salting of the roads in the UK v whatever they do or don't do in Australia. Time for chassis welding on a car thats only just over 7 years old! Must be a record, it reminds me of the vauxhall troubles of yesteryear. Ho hum.

I was worried about rus on my VX1 HSV so I waxoiled just after I got it at 2 years old after having the underside cleaned. I have cleaned down and painted the section you talk about on my car recently and touch wood it is ok. I would have a look around your brake pipes too these seem to be a bit vunerable.

yeah, I'm getting the whole underneath looked at and treated, I'll let them know about the brake pipes as well. Cheers for that

If I remember rightly you also tell immigrants to fit in or F**K off so we have no hope here in the UK of doing things properly!

If only that was true. We now have Labour in federal govt, and all states... all singing from the Bliar songbook.

As well as climate I think a significant difference between UK and Oz is that "aftermarket" corrosion protection is a big deal over there.

Most dealerships (and valetors) will sell it alongside floormats, paint protection, window tinting etc. Anything for a bit of extra profit.....

A lot of car valetors (detailers) and panel shops will also offer the service.

Logically the UK must be a harsher environment and if rust is a common problem I'm surprised that HSV specialists overhere don't do a similar off the shelf "protection package".

Mines booked in for early June (in the SE near Cranleigh), the guy seems to know whats what and what to do and comes highly recommended. I'll let you know the outcome, quote is for £250 to do the welding and sort out the entire underneath. he does a lot of total body restores on classic cars (i saw some real beauties in his workshop) so I'm hoping I get a good service. Can't beat the independents in my opinion.

Have any of you VXR8ers had a deckko under your motors yet? Had mine up on the two poster in order to shove some Redline into the tranny and it looks like a potential horror story in a few years time. Plenty of plastic but quite a bit of unprotected metal abounding.
If car is to be kept long term I would be tempted to break out the jolly old Waxoyl a bit sharpish. eek
