E46 316SE Issue

Hi guys,
not sure if anyone can help but here it goes: Intermittently when pulling away from junctions or trying to accelerate after changing in to 2nd the car judders and nothing happens, very hesitate to get going, very much like the flattest flat spot ever! I literally have to plant my floor to the floor and wait a few seconds for the engine to straighten itself out. Any ideas of what this could be? As mentioned, it isn't all the time but certainly annoying and possibly dangerous!
