Right, my rack has got to come out for a second time
Does anyone know if it's possible to get a PAS rack out sideways if you remove the ARB? I got mine out last time by removing the exhaust but I'm sure it'd be quicker if I can get it out sideways.
Will it actually fit through the chassis rails going out the drivers side?

Yes it will come out the drivers side with the exhaust in place and arb removed, but its naffing fiddly and time consuming the first time(its like one of those metal 3D puzzle things you get at xmas). So you probably wont save much time over taking the dustbin out the first time.

I'm willing to give it a go as long as I know it can be done
The exhaust is a bit of a pain to get out, be interesting to see how fiddly the sideways exit is
When you say remove the exhaust you mean just the cat pipe i presume Rob which you can do with the Exhaust in place quite easily

Hey up thought you just had it rebuilt ???? so whys it coming out again, ps did they paint the rack ??/ mines due back soon.
Yup, it's very very black now! (I didn't ask them to paint it, but hey ho!)I seem to have full power assist to the right, but not to the left once it's been on full right lock. Suspect they nicked a seal when they put it back together. I'm going to confirm it's still misbehaving in a bit.
Still, if it can come out through the drivers side it shouldn't take me too long this time!!
Fingers crossed

I was sweating like a rapist getting the pipe out last time! I reckon it's quicker to pop the ARB out if it actually gives me enough clearance. I had to remove the drop links so it's only another four bolts and only two of those are in any way awkward.
To get my cat pipe out I had to undo the six mounting bolts on the bracket and the one below the engine then push the exhaust back while pulling the pipe forwards. Not much fun!
Be interesting to know which is the quicker/easier route to getting it out.
Rob unclamp the dust bin both sides then undo the clamp holding the bottom part of the dust bin to the exhaust then from above the engine wriggle the cat back and forth and you will feel it loosen then pull it up and out through the top leaving the exhaust in situ.
Takes me fifteen minutes from start to Finnish that's cat in and cat replacement pipe in a trick Clivef told me is that

That's what I did but I just don't have enough forward clearance to do it easily. For the sake of four bolts it's gotta be worth a pop at getting it out sideways, it's still a bit of an arse getting it out vertically even with the cat out.Takes me fifteen minutes from start to Finnish that's cat in and cat replacement pipe in a trick Clivef told me is that

Can you pin point the leak mate.I had something similar, when I rebuilt the car I had the rack checked when the body was off. When I came to drive it,turned out the pinion seal was nicked, the ps company told me I would have to come back with the rack out.I left the car with them and said, you went over it,you F...ken fix it.
They ended up changing the seal insitu.($2 BMW part)
Have you taken the copper pipes and tie rods off?
PS.I didn't paint mine black, prefered the elbow greese method..

Mine's not leaking, there's a very occasional loss of power assistance to the left since the refurb. It only happens if I place the hydraulics under abnormal stresses ie. six consecutive hard right turns against the stop while stationery. As soon as I move the car it returns to normal. I *think* I'm forcing the piston against a stop and it sticks. There was play in the rack so they had to make up a brass bush to take the play out.
Unless anything changes I can live with that for now and I'll reassess how it's behaving at the end of summer.

Common sense prevails nice one Rob Unless anything changes I can live with that for now and I'll reassess how it's behaving at the end of summer.

Is that chassis powder coated or two pack ????
Had it acid dipped, phosphate treated, then a two stage powder coat.I'd probably go epoxy 2 pack next time around,I had to be very carefull not chipping the coating opening the suspension pick up points, then installing wishbones. Gassing Station | Griffith | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
