RADIATOR RECORE
Discussion
Gday Guys
Reading the forum lately and with the HOT weather in UK... and me being in Australia at the moment.
Radiators and heat is the story.
Question:
If i have my radiator recored..which could be advisable...(i havent even seen mine)
.....Are the radiators the same for all Esprits (4cyl)
.....Would a better radiator be fitted ..if the car
was in hot climate (Australia)
.....If so ... any other generic products
...... What are the size of them
......As i will be going down to a radiator place this week ,to get a quote .Depending on which i will have it recored in UK or Australia ... dependancy is who is cheaper .
Scenario:
me at raditor place
Alex "gday mate"
rad man "gday mate ,what can i do for you"
Alex "i would like to get a price to have my cars
radiator recored etc"
rad man " what type of car is it!
Alex " 87 Lotus Esprit"
rad man " where is it outside"
Alex "in England"
rad man " shit..... what's the size of it .... cores
etc etc etc"
Alex "i dont know"
Rad man " dumb barstrd"
So you can see that i have prempted the situation .
Any help apprecited ....so i can tell the raditor man size .. what i want etc
Many Thanks

Hi,
Funny you should ask, I just had mine re-cored 3 mos. ago. What the guy did (a shop with which I have previous experience) was add three cores over the stock two. The cost difference was only $35USD between the two.
The car still operates at it's 'normal' tempurature, the difference is that it stays on the low side of this range on spirited runs, with the AC on. Only in very hot stop and go traffic does the temp gauge ever climb to the top of the mormal range, never beyond it. It was a positive move and I would recommend it highly. Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE

I had the rad cored on my S3 about a year ago, I went for the same option as Lotusguy and had a triple core fitted, only added £35 to the cost. I just took it to a local radiator repair shop and they fitted the new core and it looked like new. No heating problem since and definitly worth the extra expence.
Thanks guys
I will let you know how i get on .. keep the answers coming along.....
Another poser...
If my radiator has only 2 fans .. where as a turbo has 3...
At the same time as the radiator is out/in .... putting in another fan would be of value ...or a larger one ?
If so ..what type etc
Thanks

At the same time as fitting the bigger cored radiator to my S3 I also did something about the crappy fans.
One of the OEM Ford based fans ( orange blades ) was nearly siezed solid so I went to a scrappy to get another one with no luck, but what they did have was a pair of fans from a Puegout 205 diesel.
The motors are about twice the size and there are 6 blades on each instead of 4, meaning more air flow. The pair including the plastic mounts/cowling, was only a tenner and meant I could also swap out the rusty fan mounts and knackered ABS cowling.
The new assembly was almost the right size so I striped off the un-needed bits and it bolted straight onto the radiator.
With all of the recent hot weather here in the UK I have had no problems with engine temperatures at all.
If you are interested I can sent you some pic, let me know.

Thanks guys
I went to the raditor man here in Sunshine Coast Queensland.
Gave him my questions...
His answers .... typical
.... "eh dont know those cars, you'll have to bring it in,then i can give you a price" !!!!!
So i am back to SQ1
Thanks hilly .. yes i would like a email with the costs entailed... of new 3 core radiator, fans etc .
Where do you reside at? ... i'm in Norwich.. Lotus home (though you dont see many Esprits around ... just lots of kit cars.... Elises)
I may do it when i get back to UK next week
..first i have to kick the car in the guts ... just to turn the ignition on,,, and hear that wonderful sound...TICK TICK TICK .... of the fuel pump !!!
That's what it didnt do when i came back last trip last year .. fuel pump contact were seized!
Then take the car for MOT ... see if it passes again with nothing to be done.
Many Thanks to all
