Clonking noise distributer/water pump area

Hi All

I have a clonking noise coming from the distributer/water pump area. Have disconnected the water pump and run the engine and the noise seems to be reduced but is still there. There is a small amount of play in the shafts of both the water pump and distributer. Have not been able to get at the flywheel below the water pump as of yet to check and see if there is any play there. Any thoughts as to possible causes and easy areas to check first before undergoing major jobs ?
