overheating mark V fiesta zetec
Discussion
hi,
i have got a mark V fiesta 1.25 zetec. it is my first car and i brought it from a salvage yard. i had to replace the front bumper, grille and front lights and i had my first set of wheels!! the car runs fine and im pleased with it. however the car has one fault that has only become apparent recently though i suspect it has been present undetected for some time.
basically when the car encounters stop start traffic such as in rush hour motorway traffic or even in town. the thermostat will quickly move towards the red of the thermostat and the car will start to overheat. there will often be a burning smell (when it first happened i thought it was clutch) and steam will come from the water tank where water will be poured in. when the traffic frees up and i start moving the car will quickly cool down and the temperature will move back down to normal. the air con system is also not working at the moment and i wondered if the two could be interconnected? does anyone know where i can get a good mechanic preferably a ford specalsit in london or the south east to have a good look at the car and repair it.
as an aside i also need to reapir the key as the remote key no longer works to open the door i have to open the door manually(i suspect the battery died.) also the wing mirrors have been broken and so flap around in the wind (people these days). so i need to fix these as well. finally the car is very jerkey when changing gears esp when cold and moving from 1st to 2nd. could this be due to the service thats due.
the car is reg X year 2000 and has only done 50.5K.
your help will be greatfully appreciated.

Hi,
I have a Mk V Zetec S on an 02 plate. After a year of ownership I have read through many threads on ZSOC.com about overheating. It is very common for these cars and although it has not happened to mine i can give some rough pointers.
Firstly, from the fact that the overheating starts when sat in traffic may suggest the fan is not coming on? electrical fault, fuse maybe?
The most common cause of overheating is the HCV ( heater control valve ), this can be taken out an cleaned, or a new one simply bought for about 30 quid or something.
There could be many more reasons but i guess its a start.
Im sure others will be along to offer much more sound advice than that
