Battery light on

My battery light came on today whilst driving. I left the car for an hour then went for a drive and the light was still on. does this mean a new battery or is it something more sinister? Another problem im having is the temperature - it hit 103 today whilst waiting at the lights - is this normal? The fans only kicked in at 99! Cheers.

Alternator is likely. Have a search here or seloc.org for ' battery light' or similar.

Anyone know the part number for the alternator + prices? Is it out of the MGF? I have a 2001 standard elise.
