Hi,

A question on upping the power on a S2 Exige - given that you don't seem to be able to Honda them. Can the standard drive-train take the additional power from the SP-K / SP-T conversion? Has anybody actually done an SP-T conversion to an Exige S2?

Many thanks,

Marty

I thought quite a few people had Honda conversions on their S2 Exiges, unless I'm mistaken.

Oh Jesus, my posts are now appearing in this horrible lime green!!!

On topic - OK, my bad, I have only ever seen kits for S2 Elises.

Can the std drivetrain handle the additional power of the SP-K / SP-T kits however?

Not many (if any?) S2 Exige Honda conversions, though plenty of S2 elise (pre-toyota engine) and S1 Exige/Elise conversions around.

Re the SP-K / T conversions... the drivetrain in the standard and supercharged versions of the elise / exige is mainly the same, although many of the 240bhp exige versions have been specced with the motorsport clutch upgrade (as have a few of the 190bhp cars after failures in waranty period).

So the answer is essentially yes, the drivetrain seems to be mostly up to the job, maybe with the exception of the clutch.

Just a thought... if you are thinking about getting a s/charger conversion for ur yota... it'd be a good idea to take a look at the engine conversion forum on SELOC... there's a fair few options SP, Komotec, Katana (prob more), so it might be an idea to get some feedback from people on how the conversion process went, not just how many extra brake/ lb/ft they got for their money!

My drivetrain is currently standard and is handling the extra power of the SP-K just fine. As for fitting an Exige - that should be a piece of cake - fitting it all in the Elise was the hard bitwink

I have a bunch of questions on this conversion, if you would like to go to email then that would be good as well:

1) What elises / exiges is this compatible with?
2) Total cost drive in / drive out?
3) Does it include ECU / all parts?
4) Time to fit?
5) Warranty?

Many thanks,

Marty

yeah, would rather hear from people who have had it done than a web site advertising a product...

For instance Boggy, you told me it would cost £15K plus to get an Elise Honda'ed, the website says £8.2K + VAT, now last time I checked VAT wasn't 90%

Have you spoken to Maidstone Sport's Cars or Sinclair's?

You can not get a Car converted for less than 15k, by the time you've finished you'd have spent far more than the 10k it costs for the conversion. what are you on about mate 8.5k who told you that?

10K Including VAT

+ you'll tick the box on a few options and that doesn't include the supercharger or any brake upgrades, suspension etc etc etc etc that you will need with or without the S/C I'd say at least 15k but more like 20k

Hi Boggy,

Clearly my number was pre-VAT, hence the stupid comment about VAT being 90% etc. I understand what you are saying and to be honest your view of reality turned me off Honda'ing an Elise. Not a bad thing, saved me from being bked by my wife after it cost me a lot more than I expected. The £8.4K number was taken from www.hondaelise.com

That is why I am looking at alternative power-up enhancements. The SP-K, looks good and so I am getting a realistic view of it from people that have paid up and lived through the experience.

Thanks,

Marty

sorry, whist I see what your getting at, that's not exactly accurate or fair...

many people have just brought the basic std install (at £8,495+vat), to say that you *have* to order the options/upgrades as well is just rubbish, you don't *need* to change the suspension or the brakes any more than you do if you have a SP-K/Katana/etc upgrade. (if you actually bothered to look, Lotus still sell the 240 cup cars/2-11's/etc with STD BRAKES).

your making out that it's mandatory to add these items and thus bump the price up to £20K.

and whist we are on £20K, where did you get that from??

adding it up, even if you take just about every option, your still going to be well under £15K+vat

Can you please get real and compare like with like?

edit - and if you really want to do this, consider that a bog-std base NA Honda install is still going to offer way higher performance than any (current) toyota engine upgrade.

Hi Scuffers,

Thanks for the input, very interesting. I get the feeling that Boggy is coming from the perspective of somebody who A) has the cash to do it all at once and properly (lucky guywink) and B) who is preparing the car for track use. I probably shold have mentioned that I am not going to track it.

How does a bog standard Honda offer better performance than the SP-T package at 240bhp/240lb/ft? Maybe the Honda is more reliable? I am not sure, as of yet I have had neither weeping

reliability is another subject (and what not what I was getting at!)

as with most things, looking at the raw numbers does not really tell the story, you have to look at the end product and what they are capable off.

to put this in context, a std NA honda can outrun any Toyota converstion out there (assides the GT-3 spec engines etc.), you only have to look at the last round of Elise Throphy, Chris Randal in an NA Honda totally trounced the entire field...

(I know that there are no aftermarket Toyota cars in ET, you might want to ask a few people why that is?)

PS. most people that go on about £20K etc are the ones that can't afford it, hence try to justify not doing it using silly numbers....

If you want to buy performance and don't consider a) gear ratios and b) power curves along with peak bhp and torque numbers then your probably wasting your time and money.

It's useful comments like that which really make looking into this stuff enjoyable. What would you recommend?

Morning all,

Sorry for delayed response but I don't currently have my Laptop at home

I meant 20k if you bolt on the S/C and a few other bit's along with the mods you need to make to the car to copewith the power upgrade, I'm not going to get into an argument about a conversion that I'm never going to pursue as it's not my bag. I must say thou Simon I disagree that you don't need certain upgrades to car that's built to run with a 120 bhp - 160 bhp Rover engine? all of a sudden it now has around 320 - 350 bhp? Come on I've been in enough car's to know they need bigger brakes, better tyres suspension etc? I'm not knocking the conversion far from it, it's fantastic but those S/C Honda's or Audi Turbo's are really mental and as such are an ongoing investment, your always going to be spending money if you use it on track or on the road like you would with any upgraded Car.

As far as Toyota engine car's go, I believe that like for like a 2 11 is as quick as a normally aspirated Honda? Randy is a fantastic driver and his car prep unquestionable but if Martin would have been driving I think we'd have seen a different result, Gavin had some bad luck and you can't talk about the other 2 11's as those driver's aren't as competitive as sir Randy

I'm not rich far from it but I'm afraid to say that my Wife is, if I wanted a Honda I could get one today, If I wanted a Ferrari I could get one today, the fact is that I like Lotus always have and always will, I choose the official route as I needed dealer back up, my trophy Car will be a Toyota engine car for this reason and no other, I'm not kidding myself I'm not as capable as you Simon or Randy, Andrew etc I'll just be having fun

Boggy
