Just noticed today (im sure i would have noticed before if a long term problem) that my speedo gets to 35MPH then goes back to zero!!! The odometer still works but is it just a loose connection affecting the speedo?? Its a 2001 x-type 3.0 sport

cheers

That would be a fault with the Speedo, if there was a loose connection, nether would work.

We have a X-Type 3.0 Lt as well as the XKR
We had to change the instrument pack, SatNav as well on ours, seems they do have a problem!!

ive got it booked in for friday - the dealer reckons it might have something to do with ABS ?

I see the instrument clusters are £300 odd + fitting

This is very common. It's a broken sensor ring on one of the rear outer cv joints. The speedo & ABS get their signals from these rings but over time they corrode & break up. You will soon also get an ABS failure light on the dash & the check engine light might come on as well.

thanks for that w824gb3! Have you any idea of the cost and would if have to be main dealers as i dont know of any indys near me here in Belfast!

PS only the actual speedo will be affected then? Not the trip computer , temp/fuel gauge etc?

cheers

Before you go down this route make sure it really is the rear sensors. I'm not sure which of the ABS sensors feed the speedo - it might even be a front wheel sensor or the wiring to the sensor. Best to get it hooked up to an OBD2 code reader before spending any money.

thanks for that! Ive got it booked in to dealers on friday. Sounds like the sensor ring ,judging by the other posts although my warning lights havent came on yet! Maybe because its only occured the last couple of days ,my speedo is the ONLY thing affected at the min. Ive just spent the guts of £500 to get a CD Changer fitted this week so i really hope its a cheap(ish) fix

well i dont think its going to be a cheap(ish) fix unfortunately! I was quoted £308 inc labour for EACH sensor and it needs 2 (2hrs labour each side)!! It maybe needs a ABS module and the mechanic reaffirmed my fears that the car wasnt as "sharp" as it should be. It came up on the dealers computer that my 3.0 sport was a 2.5 engine?? although he reckons this is a mistake but he also reckons either the CATS are fcked or IF im lucky just needs plugs! But surely the car would jerk when idling etc if it only needed plugs would it not?

Anyway, £500+ for a CD Changer on tues and possible £1000s IF these faults are confirmed on monday -its breaking my heart

Thats a long list of unusual problems. I'd be going elsewhere for a 2nd opinion if I were you.

Also, why are you paying over £500 for a cd changer when you can have the ACM (Audio Connectivity Module) for a lot less. This allows you to connect an IPOD or USB memory stick to the car & play it from the head unit. I bought mine off ebay & fitted it in a couple of hours for less than £100. I use a 4GB usb stick which holds 80 CD's worth of music.

Got the 2 sensors (arms whatever?) fitted by my local VAG mechanic. Paid £170 for the 2 parts from main dealer and the guy charged £115 to fit them! Well chuffed because ive saved £450+ by avoiding the main dealer! The ABS and eng.management warning lights are both now out
