i took my bike to work for the first time today and there's a stretch of average speed cameras on the M1 between 26 and 27. As most bikes don't have front numberplates, does that mean the cameras can't recognise us? not that i would condone speeding through road works or otherwise i hasten to addwink

also, does that mean we;re immune from regular forward facing cameras too?

Immune? Really? wink

Bear in mind if you take the michael too much, plain clothes cars do exist.

Same goes for the forward facing cameras, though they are a LOT more likely to put time and effort into tracking you down if you either trip them on a regular basis, or do anything silly like informing them of your insouciance through the medium of finger gestures. As long as we dont annoy them, they'll mostly let that one slide.

Do bear in mind that police have been known to take pictures at bike meets, to record bikes and riders to try and track persistent offenders down...

Sure thing, I have read in Motorcycle News that they keep a record of persistant offenders making note of their Crash Hats and Leathers so that they can base a case on it. As above rule of thumb is don't take the piss and you will have years of bike fun.wink

thanks for the info guys. being a novice on the bike means i haven't really been getting up to any silly speeds. still finding my feet on two wheels so to say! But the thought about forward facing cameras occurred to me this morning as my mind was free to wander without being distracted by Wogan first thing in the morning. i must confess i do miss Radio 2 during my commute on two wheels frown

err I have a slightly on topic question..... do you know if the Forward facing cameras also work on traffic in the other lane? There is one on a local road to me and the traffic always slows to 40, in a NSL arearolleyes, even if they are going in the opposite direction.. does it work in both directions??

Akropovicswink You know it makes sense...

IsMad, yes, some of the evil little bastids can, I do believe be set to trigger on a rear facing set of speeding points, though I think those are quite few and far between

They do! A friend of mine did a free road training day run by the Northamptonshire Police at Silverstone (you had to be a resident in the county, or say you live at your mates house to be eligable) three years ago. The day started with the cops asking everyone to life up their legs in the air so they could see the sole of their boots. A biker was going around pulling wheelies and doing tricks in front of their Trevelo cameras! He wore different leathers, but always wore the same boots. Their comments were the lines of "he will slip up, and we will catch him, we are paitent"

And a year or so ago, there was a tw@t on a BMW from memory that blasted around setting off speed cameras for kicks. Somewhere like Herts. Cops looked up how many of that bike was registered in the county, and visited each one (wasn't many bikes registered). They got him.

Moral of the story, take the piss and rub their nose in it, and you will pay the price.

I am no saint, but I always slow down for speed cameras - last thing we want is to give clueless politicians a reason to persecute bikers even more.
