VFR.... but which generation....
Discussion
Greetings, after a bit of advice from some weathered bikers..
Just about to do my direct access and i have decided to go for a viffer. The question is which type?
I know not to go for the latest V-Tech model as the engine is not the best - and besides i would be stretched to afford one.
The decision is that i could go for a 1998ish wi-fi VFR800 which would be in reasonable nick, or a 1995/1996 VFR750 which is in good nick.
I've got £2000-£2500 to blow.
A thoughts or advice gents?

I've just reluctantly bought a 1998 VFR800 FiW. I say reluctantly because I've always avoided their dull reliability. It turns out though that my opinion was wrong. They are a cracking bike.
I've done about 2500 miles in the three weeks I've owned it and it hasn't missed a beat.
Mine will do about 160-180 miles per tank (approx 42-45mpg) on the commute and about 100 miles if I ride it really hard.
I found the riding position hard on my wrists but got used to that and adapted my position to suit. The seat was also rock hard once the foam compressed after about 20 miles, so I replaced it with an after-market one with gel pad from Custom Seats which is much better.
After 3 weeks of the daily commute, one long journey and a day on the back lanes, I really have warmed to it and now look forward to the commute. I even got the pegs down on it today on both sides such is my confidence in it already.
I've only ever heard good things about the 750 too, so get whichever seems the best to you. For £2500 you'd get a very good, low mileage 750 or an OK 800 with fairly high mileage I think.
There are more bargains becoming available though as people start to worry about money, so you may get a steal
Good luck with the search.

Personally i think any of them are great bikes other than the 1st generation of the VTEC bikes.. I've not tried the latest VTEC edition but i hear they have resolved the 'cam changeover' issue and smoothed out the delivery.
I think the early VFR's were fairly sporty focused and they gradually became more and more sports tourer..
I think for £2500 a late 750 or early 800 would be a fine allround bike..
