Right, a little info for you.
I bought this 1972 1300 VW Beetle around 3 years ago.

Since then, new rear quarters have been welded in, heater channels, chassis pan and tunnel, front clip, rear apron, front quarters.

New original VW parts have been used where possible, including the doors and other choice parts.

The aim is to get a 'tastefully' modified beetle.
It is currently away getting prepped for paint, and will be coming back in focus ST orange biggrin

I have also purchased a few Porsche parts for the chassis and interior.

Looks good. Are those Boxster alloys you plan to put on? Also, what engine do you think you will go for?

It was summer 2007 when it was meant to be finished wink

However, there was a rather large change in plans when all the race spec parts were ordered biggrin

Cheers,

They are currently boxster wheels yeah,

however they are most likely going to be changed for some 911 twists instead.

Engine wise.... That is yet to be decided, but whatever I go for, I'm hoping for at least 175bhp wink

christ, even 100bhp makes these things rapid.

with 175hp you've got to be looking at sub 5 seconds to 60, surely?

not alot. especially once you start stripping stuff out of them! a 1776 with a decent build will propel one to 60 in 6 - 7 depending on which parts you use (so around 100bhp for that)

As quoted from john maher racing (figures taken from strip runs):

190bhp - 3.5 secs
168 - 4.8 secs
156: 5 secs.

All depends on how much you want to spend really, and where you get the engine built. It's not uncommon for some 1776's to put 2180's or the like to shame, as people go for 2180 thinking it sounds a much better prospect, but build with rubbish parts. 1776 engines however can have less money put in them with bloody awesome parts, making for a very, VERY quick car.

I think everyone else has answered these questions for me wink
yeah, I expect it to be fairly rapid... however due to the gearbox build it is going to be more for street driving than for drag racing...

I could of course go for a small high powered 1776 as was suggested, but that is a lot of hp for an aircooled engine to be pushing out with such a small cc.

I am mildy tempted to go type 4 power with upright porsche cooling and maybe have a fairly large cc and not in such high levels of tuning. (this was I can run the engine comfortably without straining it every time I drive)

As I'm sure you can all gather, with a larger type 4 engine I will still get the power and have more torque too...

But yes, I am hoping to have sub 5 second 0-60 times from it.

Which we can all agree is awesome out of a 37 year old car wink

Oh for gawd sake!!!!!! Why did you have to go and quote figures like that for. The Westfield is going to suffer from further upgrades now, I hold you fully responsible. shoot

In future please take care what you post, my bank manager is a miserable git at the best of times and quotes like that will make him an unhappy bunny.

Ah well, straight line oomph isnt everthing. Just surprises some people when they realise how quick a beetle can go!

i had a 1776 with twin dual choke webber 40's and a 110 cam.
was both drivable and very quick with my strengthened 1200cc box.
have fun smile

Looking good so far mate!

I just got a quote for a 1776 60 in 6 engine from richard morena...

near enough 4000 quid! However, that is from a brilliant builder and with top class parts...

....sorely tempted now!

sounds good....

have you looked anywhere else yet?

I heard of a bloke offering engines with a 3 year warranty.... wink
Apparently the engines are good quality too (obviously I have no personal experience yet) but it still looks ace.

want me to dig out the web page?
