spending 100K SE30 or 6.0?
Discussion
in my 'umble opinion:
SE30 - almost unique in so mnay ways and intentionally limited production with more than just a certain charm... same bhp of years later SV's... They aren't actually Diablos - try finding a Diablo badge on any of them. You may have noticed that the 25 Anniversary doesn't have a Countach badge anywhere either - do the 40th Annniversary cars have a Murciélago badge anywhere????
Diablo 6.0 - far more of a suitable for the 21st century car in many ways but perhaps lacking that 'edge' of rarity...
I wouldn't say they are meeting at £100k tho' - more likely to be settling to a low £90k zone for now...
Having said all that, if any 5.7 engined cars can lead the Diablos back up the value ladder then the SE30 would have to be the one... A good one will be a joy forever, as long as it hasn't been b*gg*red about with and sadly some have!

Pete,
Thats a tough one.
Quite like the SE30, not sure about the light metallic purple but really like it in bright red.

This ones a bit different not really my colour though.

If it was my money then it would be a 6.0 for me every time, have seen loads of these in the flesh and they never cease to blow me away. Can't believe the prices are dropping.

This one caught my eye last year at the Lamborghini Club Annual Dinner, not sure of the exact model but really looked the part. Anyone know the model of this one.

Sorry for all the pics, but we are talking about the Diablo, one of the all time greatest supercars.
Regards
Tim

Nice pics. Unfortunately its 30 purple or nothing for me. hence my roadster. Hoping to pair her up with a 30purple SE.
Think its a diablo despite the lack of badge. Just bought D114BLO to put on her.
The red one now owned by Oz, is the only red SE in right hand. Reckon there is about 3 purple SEs still on the road in right hand.

I had the same decision to make last year. As you may know I went for a 6.0.
Although I love the look of the SE (especially the alloys) there are quite a number of things I prefer about the 6.0. Yes the SE is rarer and will potentially hold its value a bit better (although both are not exactly plentiful in RHD) but it has a few drawbacks.
The front spoiler is very low to the ground so easy to catch, the interior is far inferior to the 6.0, the brakes are not as good (smaller discs and no ABS), the car is pre-Audi so build quality not as good, the windows are a joke and it doesn't have power steering (and sometimes no aircon).
I think you will be lucky to secure a viola RHD SE but you never know...

That Candyapple Red Diablo at the LCUK annual dinner last year is a late SV... It's one of the very few glass-lamp 1998 spec. cars and was recently available from Top Gear cars. It now belongs to a new Member of LCUK in Scotland and was driven to the Scottish Motorfair @ Knockhill last weekend. It looked at least as good as it did last September - something to do with there being some sunshine involved!!
I know that the SE30 looks exactly like a Diablo to the casual observer but there are lots of not-Diablo parts to the car including unique (to the SE30) sideskirts and spoilers and 'easy-to-remove' cats for a valuable extra 30bhp (!) but you can call it a Diablo if you want; only a stickler for accuracy would insist it wasn't one though...
The dark red SE30 seen outside Brooklands is a fairly unique colour. That car was originally made for the Sultan of Brunei but the order was cancelled as he already had quite a few of them. It's believed to be the only Sultan of Brunei Red car in private hands.
The Viola colour was also used on a few Diablo SVs as well as some of the SE30s... there was at least one SE30 in that colour that was in the Club but which seems to have vanished, sadly and one of the Viola SVs is now within the Club.
Obviously there are people who supply additional bodykit parts which look like bits of SE30, or Diablo GT front bonnets or SV engine covers or... but, hey, that's the kind of thing certain people fit to 'their' cars before stinging the next poor sap to wander into their lair...

Hi Craig,
yes it's a toughie, I also love the 6.0 interior, side running boards and the 6.0 wider front end. But the SE is so sleek and raw. The 30Purple too just does it for me. Shame no one spec'd a 6.0 in that colour. have also tracked down a 30 purple SV but the owner (a collector) didn't want to sell.

the red Sv is a really nice example, but saw it too late on carlo's, topgearcars.
The side skirts were not unique to the SE and hardly mean that its not a diablo.
The different side skirts and lower rear bumper are also used on the roadster (another reason why I bought one) and the skirts etc were available as factory options on SVs (hence the red open headlamp car pictured).
The rear louvre and front spolier are the only unique panels on the SE.

Why not get the car the you want and respray it viola? I know some people have issues with changing original spec but the older a car gets the less relevant this is - think about how many Countach and Miura have had colour changes for example.
Especially if you intend on keeping the car - might as well have it as you would want it.
I am even thinking of respraying my 6.0 (not viola though...)

Hi Craig,
Yeah its a possibility. The interor of Amari's blue 6.0 would go well with Viola and be cheaper. It's a real tough thing to decide. Hope to secure my 2nd car in next week or so.
Peter
I doubt a 6.0 professionally resprayed in viola would be worth less, possobly the opposite due to its rarity. It would cost a lot to do correctly though.Yeah its a possibility. I'm a die hard Diablo fan and its a great question you ask as both of these are my favourite Diablos. I think I would go for the 6.0 in a rare colour for the reasons below:
1. its modern and easier to drive
2. both are as jaw-droppingly gorgeous as each other althought the SE30 is sleeker.
3. you would drive the 6.0 more and isnt that what it is all about
4. you wouldnt care as much about a stonechip on the 6.0
5. value? Are you an investor or a driver?

Yes matthew you're probably right. As for the ivestor bit, only from the point of view that what ever holds its price best would presumably be the most desirable car and therefore the best choice? Trouble is the SE is what got me here in the first place and also had a big bearing on my roadster. Got some serious thinking to do.
There is only one bug-bare about a 6.0, and that's when not then have an early merci. Though again the 6.0 is sleeker than the merci.

no comparision IMHOThere is only one bug-bare about a 6.0, and that's when not then have an early merci. Though again the 6.0 is sleeker than the merci.
the Diablo is much more 'Lamborghini' - designed by the godfather himself, Gandini
I don't like the rounded Murci shape as much and the interior is a step backwards
much better to get a last of the line Diablo with issues sorted than a first of the line Murci
as for an LP640...maybe in a few years

the merci does appear to me a bit like a 6.0 that been pumped full of air at 1 million PSI and about to burst. But it must have some great characteristics to drive
Alot of the running gear is similar IIRC. Given the choice of the 2 again, I would prob go for the 6 as the interior is to die for, the Murci does drive alot easier but that could be a negative or positive. There are less than 100 RHD UK Murcis and there must be a lot less 6's... isn't it something like 30 RHD cars in UK?Gassing Station | Supercar General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
