Are the door switches in the sills working properly (easy to test with a multimeter)?

If yours is anything like mine when you lock the car/arm the alarm with the doors or boot open it will beep at you. If the door switches are broken it wont do this any more for that door. I replaced one of mine yesterday. Turns out it was pretty coroded. Now works nicely again...

Is it only one side or both that doesn't work?

I know it sounds obvious but after I found that the fuse had blown and replaced it it still didn't work so was left scratching my head a bit. Even though the bulb looked good I got a bit of emery cloth and rubbed up the ends a bit and bingo - there was light !

I think what you are hearing is possibly the door motor?

Try operating the door switch and see if the click happens each time you push it in/out. If it does then that would suggest there is nothing wrong with the door switch and the problem is with the bulb/light/light circuit - see Simon's suggestion above.

Does the alarm beep when you activate it. As above.
If it doesnt then it suggests that the door switch is OK as the alarm will beep if it sees a door or boot/bonnet open.

Aren't there relays behind the carpet in the panel next to the door?? The carpet, if orignal, should be held in place by velcro.
