Hello,

I've got a Dax Rush which i use everyday, i'm getting a little bored of getting wet in the winter and doin motorways in no fun at all. (had it a year now so i haven't given up too easily!!)

My fully comp insurance on the kit car covers me 3rd party on anyone else's car, i am trying to find out...

a) Where do i stand if i want to borrow my mothers car for a few months at a time (i.e. all winter ;-), Insured or not insured???

b) would i be able to go and tax it with my insurance document (i.e. 3rd party someone else's car)???

Any ideas would be much appreciated (confirmation one way or the other would be even better!!)

Cheers

Tim

Starts well - as long as the car is not owned by you or hired by you then your insurance will cover you at the basic legal level to drive on the public road.

Unfortunately...

If stolen whilst you are in charge - no cover.
If it catches fire - no cover.
If insurance company finds out about extended borrowing you become primary user (in their eyes) and - you guessed it - no cover.

Last one is a bit of a problem as you lose the primary road cover and you are driving uninsured.

Best to borrow cars "one day at a time"

And... No, you can't insure the vehicle. Despite what the law says (you need insurance to drive the vehicle) the Post Office and DVLC will not license a vehicle unless the V5 and the Insurance document have the same name. I ran into this one as my car is insured through my business policy, so they refused to tax it. I had to get the V5 and Schedule of Insurance to match up.

Sorry

Thanks guys, i think you have just confirmed my suspicions. 3rd party only cover is ok as the car is not worth much anyway.

I had thought of getting a trader to tax it, and it looks like thats the way to go.

The only reason this becomes a problem is cos of the price of insurance anyway. I pay £575 for my dax Rush cosworth with unlimited miles & no garage, but a 1.1 metro 3rd party only is more than £600. Fin ridiculous!!

Thanks for your help, i think i'm gonna do it anyway, got to stay dry this winter, i got a job that requires me turning up in a clean, "DRY" suit

Why don't you get insured as a named driver on your mothers policy? You can tax it in this regard too.

Stig,

Costs too much money another £200-300 a year. there seems little point when the cars not worth much.

The long term idea would be for my mum not to have to insure it at all and when they need to use it my dad could drive it on his 3rd party only cover. (although that seems a bit close to the line of "a car not owned by you" i think).

Basically i drive the dax everyday cos insurance is so ridiculous on any other car, i am just looking for a way of staying dry this winter without paying out another load of cash on insurance that doubles up on what i already have with the dax.

What a blagger eh!

Tim.

It may sound silly, but get a quote for fully comp - you might be suprised (in a good way). These days, TPFT cover costs silly money and, in odd cases, can be more than FC!

"Fin ridiculous" is right!
